OPERATIONS ORDER EXERCISE FALLEN MERCURY

SITUATION

2137 Calgary Highlanders RCACC will participate in Exercise Fallen Mercury,

mandatory winter training, to be conducted in Water Valley, AB, from 1700 18 Mar 05 to 1600 20 Mar 05.

MISSION

To provide cadets with winter indoctrination training.

EXECUTION

a. General Outline

This exercise will be conducted in four phases:

(1) Phase One. Personnel will assemble at Mewata Armouries, load stores and kit on to transport, travel to Water Valley bivouac site, unload stores and kit from transport, erect tents and construct bivouac area, conduct briefing for Phase Two activities, and rest.

(2) Phase Two. All training will be conducted on Saturday 19 Mar and Sunday 20 Mar IAW Annex A.

(3) Phase Three. Personnel will dismantle and secure bivouac site, load stores onto transport and prepare for departure.

(4) Phase Four. Personnel will travel to Mewata Armouries, unload, clean and store all stores and kit and disperse.

b. Groupings and Taskings

(1) Groupings. Cadets will be grouped individually under the direction of the CO for all training.

c. Coordinating Instructions

(1) Timings. Exercise timing will be IAW Annex A

(2) Routes. Travel from Mewata Armouries to Water Valley. Annex F outlines the following routes in diagram format. RV will be as follows:

(i) Mewata Armouries to Bow Trail west to Crowchild North. Hwy 1A to Cochrane. North on Hwy 22. West on TWP RD 2902 to site at GR 637028

ii) Training Area to Didsbury Hospital – TWP RD 2902 to Hwy 22. North on Hwy 22 to Hwy 582, East to Didsbury.

RVs RV for Water Valley Site will be residence building.

(3) Administrative Instructions. It is expected that all cadets are to participate. There will be a sign-up sheet posted on the Bulletin Board. This is to determine the total amount of food rations to be purchased. All cadets will indicate whether they require vegetarian or other special dietary needs. Deadline for sign up will be end of parade night 14 Mar 05. Sign-up sheet is included in Annex G.

SERVICE SUPPORT

a. Rations and Feeding. All rations will be FRATS. Grocery list outlined in Annex E.

b. Accommodations. All cadets to sleep in ten person tents all staff in two and/or five person tents IAW Annex D.

c. Stores. All stores IAW Annex B.

d. Transport

(1) Cadets and staff not otherwise tasked to be transported by two-45pax bus from Cardinal Coach Lines.

(2) All stores and personal kit to be transported by 3-tonne cube truck from ASU Calgary or from Budget Car and Truck Rentals.

(3) Emergency vehicle to be 4x4 rental pick-up truck from ASU Calgary or from Budget Car and Truck rentals.

e. Dress. All CIC officers will wear combat clothing. Civilian Instructors and cadets may wear approved field clothing with CI or Cadet identifier, or civilian clothing IAW Annex C. Personal kit for exercise shall be IAW Annex C.

f. Emergency Procedures

(1) Casualties will be evacuated by emergency vehicle via previously stated route to Didsbury Hospital located in Didsbury, AB. Parent or guardian will be contacted.

(2) Exercise First Aid kits will be located at bivouac CP.

g. POL

(1) Vehicles will be fuelled by driver as required.

(2) Naphtha for Coleman stoves and lanterns will be provided in stores. Naphtha will be secured in POL storage point. Stoves and lanterns will be filled at POL filling point in leak-proof drip trays and will be wiped off after filling. See Annex D for location of POL storage point; and

(3) Any spill will be cleaned up IAW approved methods.

COMMAND AND SIGNALS

a. Command.

(1) OIC Ex is Lt Sun.

(2) 2IC Ex is CI Dix.

b. Signal.

(1) During the exercise, communication will be by Motorola hand-held radios and will operate on Channel 1.

2) Proper radio procedure will be observed.

3) The codeword “NO DUFF” will be used for real emergency calls.

4) Local contact: TBD

5) All other communications will be verbal.

6) Call Signs will be allocated on Friday, 18 Mar 05.

-NORTH on Hwy 22 (go for about 33 KM)

-WEST on Water Valley Road (Township Road 29.02) and go until a Y-intersection (mountain blocks the way)

-Take the road to the right and go about 3KM (you will go over a Texas gate; right after that about 20m will be the gate to Camp Bow Cross (GR 637028). It will be on your left-hand side.
