Which Brand of Paper Towel: Brawny, Bounty, Scotts

WHICH BRAND OF PAPER TOWEL: BRAWNY BOUNTY, SCOTTS OR VIVA WILL ABSORB THE MOST WATER?

The purpose of this project is to see which brand of

paper towel: Brawny, Bounty, Scotts, or Viva, will

absorb the most water. The hypothesis was: If I test

four brands of paper towels: Brawny, Bounty, Scotts,

or Viva, to see which one will absorb the most water

then I think Bounty will absorb the most water

because the manager at Publix told me that is the best

selling brand. The three topics that were researched for this science fair project are: water, paper and trees. The researcher has learned that water is a common chemical substance that is essential for the survival of all known forms of life. Paper is thin material mainly used for writing upon, printing upon or packaging. Trees play an important role in producing oxygen and reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, as well as moderating ground temperatures. For this project the researcher put 20 milliliters of water in a glass bowl then he put one brand of paper towel in the bowl for 2 minutes to see how much water it absorbed. He then saw how much water was left in the bowl and subtracted it from 20 ml, his starting number. He repeated this four times with each brand of paper towel, and calculated an average. He found Brawney absorbed an average of 15.5 milliliters of water, Bounty absorbed an average of 12.38 milliliters of water, Viva absorbed an average of 8.38 milliliters of water, and Scotts absorbed an average of 7.63 milliliters of water. The hypothesis: If I test four brands of paper towels: Brawny, Bounty, Scotts, or Viva, to see which one will absorb the most water then I think Bounty will absorb the most water because the manager at Publix told me that is the best selling brand; was disproved because Brawney brand paper towels absorbed more water then Bounty. Brawney absorbed the most liquid 15.5 ml, Bounty came in second with 12.38 ml, Viva was third with 8.38 ml, and Scotts was last with 7.63 ml. The researcher did not encounter any problems while he was doing my project. The researcher would not do anything different next time. The researcher can use the knowledge he gained in the future by purchasing Brawney paper towels, because they picked up the most liquid.
