Environmental Science (Geology & Ecology)
2003
June 24-28, 2003
High School Graduating Class of 2004
Project: Plants and climates in urban landscapes.
Project: Ground water site evaluation after a mock chemical spill.
Fossil, mineral and rock collecting opportunities.
Learn about environmental sciences careers from professionals working in industry & government.
Examine features along the Maumee River : Toledo to Grand Rapids, OH
Camp Participants
Approximately twenty high school students from the graduating class of 2004 who have completed HS courses in biology and chemistry and have an interest in environmental science (ecology and geology).
Camp Description
Wednesday: Participants will work in small groups to characterize the geology, chemistry and hydrology of a shallow aquifer at the University of Toledo’s Stranahan Arboretum and evaluate water quality in order todetermine whether a mock chemical spill has contaminated a surface pond and ground water at the site. Students will analyze their results and prepare a PowerPoint group presentation of the study.
Thursday: Participants will be led through an exploration of a variety plants and trees at Stranahan Arboretum in order to understand the plant ecology of the area. Later in the afternoon, there will be a fossil collecting trip.
Friday: A field trip along the Maumee River from Toledo to Grand Rapids, OH provides participants an opportunity to observe features of ecological, environmental and geologic interest.
Saturday: Participants (and parents) will have the opportunity to meet with and question professionals who work in the environmental “industry” in order to learn about career opportunities in geology, ecology and the environmental sciences.
Camp Cost
The cost of the camp is $100, which covers room, meals and all transportation expenses during the camp, as well as fieldwork supplies and a camp T-shirt.
Transportation to and from the University of Toledo is the responsibility of the student. Students, along with two graduate teaching assistants, will be housed
in a residence hall on campus that has
24-hour security. Applications should be received by May 9. Applicants will be notified of acceptance status by May 30.
