Career Objectives I strive to be part of a growth-oriented organization that provides new challenges in the writing and Information Technology fields. It is important for me to keep pace with new developments in order to always improve myself by acquiring new skills and learning about new technologies. Computer skills: Applications -- Extensive knowledge in MS PowerPoint, excellent background in desktop publishing using software such as Adobe PageMaker 7.0, photo editors such as, Adobe PhotoShop CS, Adobe Illustrator 10.0, and Macromedia Fireworks 4.

Operating Systems - Extensive experience with Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME/XP and Macintosh OS 8 platforms.

Web Development - Developed several personal and academic Web sites. Excellent skills with web page editors such as Macromedia Dreamweaver/Fireworks 4 & MX, Netscape Composer, and Claris Home Page 3; familiarity with Macromedia Flash 4.

Research skills: Computer-assisted and library research -- I have become adept in the use of search engines on the Internet in combination with the traditional mode of research to effectively investigate the various health, science and other issues I write about.

Writing Skills

o  I have honed my skills continuously at professional writing from 1991 until now. I started as a reporter/feature writer for Nigeria’s most prominent paper The Guardian Newspapers Limited.

o  As an MSU journalism graduate student, I wrote regularly for the Environmental Journalism Department publication, EJ Newsletter, and the MSU Toxicology Institute’s newsletter IET Update.

o  At the moment I am the editor of The Voice newsletter, a publication of the Center of Excellence (COE) at the College of Human Medicine. Also I make contributions to Federal grant applications for the Centers of Excellence (COE) and the Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) which support our programs.

Employment History


1) Editor & Multicultural Information Systems Manager, MSU College of Human Medicine Center of Excellence, January 2001 - now.


Duties: I write stories, layout pages and edit The Voice newsletter for the Center. The Voice, a monthly newsletter is distributed to the students, faculty, staff, and alumni members of the College and anyone interested in the health issues of the disadvantaged. Its contents cover topics such as direct (habit, heredity) and indirect (policy, environmental) causes of diseases among the disadvantaged populations. I also develop needed expert systems by translating medical concepts to layman's language. I format the articles to suit On-line publication then post the web version of the articles on the Center's Internet site. In addition, I have assisted our director to write the federal grant that support our programs.

Other duties include tutoring and organizing computer education workshops for groups of medical students on the application of Microsoft and web design software. I have organized same for other levels of students such as middle-high school students in our programs, including the Summer Science Academy and the Leaders Achieving Notable Education, LANE, Premedical Society.

Accomplishments:

·  Renamed the Center's newsletter from Minority Premed News to The Voice, redefined its editorial content to include wider issues of interest to the target audience.

·  Developed and designed several other publications such as the COE brochure and Resource Guide for Entering Students.

·  Compiled and documented annual reports for the programs that the Center runs. The programs are the Pre-Professional Preparatory Institute, Pre-health Admission Program, Health Disparity Research Experience, Summer Young Peoples College, Science in the City, Advanced Baccalaureate Learning Experience, Leaders Achieving Notable Education, Health Careers Club, Summer Science Academy, and Health Professions Summer Scholar Academy.

·  Established vibrant forums of communication between the Center and its affiliated members such as the alumni, faculty, and students via mediums such as the LISTSERV, ANGEL, the newsletter, and the Web sites.

·  Currently, serve as a mentor to student groups such as the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) and the Latino Mid-West Medical Student Association (LMMSA).

·  Spear-headed the formation of CHM Asian Medical Student Association.

·  Created from scratch and continue to maintain a number of Web sites, including www.msu.edu/unit/coemmeh/ and www.msu.edu/unit/hcop/ .

·  Assists hundreds of disadvantaged and under-served students – medical, pre-medical, middle, high school – to acquire computer and writing skills through workshops and on one-on-one training sessions.

·  Currently creating a Web Site that will showcase resources for Careers in Medicine and Multicultural Information. These two projects are primed to provide myriad forms of information in both electronic and hard copy versions, for the benefit of CHM students, staff and faculty (and interested members of the public).

2) Research Assistant/Technical Writer, Center for Integrative Toxicology (formerly Institute for Environmental Toxicology), Michigan State University, MSU, September 1996 -- January 2001.
Duties: Conducted research, interpreted data, and analyzed findings on topical environmental/health issues. Topics included the effects of radon, PCBs and lead on people and the environment; and common animal diseases such as the mad cow disease. I developed needed expert systems by translating technical and scientific jargons and concepts to user-friendly language. I wrote up and formatted the articles to suit On-line and hard copy publications; uploaded the articles on the Institute's web site (http://www.iet.msu.edu/Newsletter/ET_news.htm); designed the Institute's IET Update newsletter. I also edited the Institute's bi-weekly bulletin; and co-organized (with Jim Detjen, Professor and Journalism Knight Chair), annual training institutes for environmental journalists from the Great Lakes states; etc.

Accomplishments:

·  Created the institute's first and broad-based regular newsletter and named it IET Update.

·  Created a vibrant link between the Institute and its affiliated members including the different departments, alumni, faculty, and students.

·  Maintained two types of coverage: web-based and hard copy publications. Hard copies shall be provided on request.

·  Assisted Professor Jim Detjen to organize the annual training institutes for environmental journalists from the Great Lakes States (including Ontario).

·  Assisted Professor Jim Detjen to organize the 200 international conference for members of the Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ)

Past Projects:

Managed the Center for Integrative Toxicology website (then IET) @ http://www.iet.msu.edu/ It is the Institute's foremost tool for its outreach program. The project outlines latest news, regulations, ongoing research, related academic programs, and myriad toxicology issues for journalists and the public.

Early in 2001, I developed and maintained some of Department of Pediatrics & Human Development Internet-based classes including HM 548: Medical Humanities, HM 543: Human Development and Behavior in Society; PHM 563: Medical Pharmacology; and PHD 523: Genetics for Medical Practice. These Sites used VU widgets for maximum interactivity among students and their professors.

3) Feature Writer, The Guardian Newspapers, Lagos, Nigeria - September 1991- February 1996. Web site: http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/
Duties: Wrote in depth full-page feature stories on a variety of topics including health and the environment; edited and rewrote opinion stories; and supervised interns/part-time staffers.
