LEGISLATIVE ASSISTANT

Job Description

The Legislative Assistant reports to the public policy team. The Vice President for Government Affairs serves as the Legislative Assistant’s supervisor.

The Legislative Assistant provides daily administrative assistance to the public policy team in order to carryout the legislative mission, goals and programs of the Maryland Chamber. Clerical and other legislative types of office work are the primary tasks associated with this full-time position.

Specific responsibilities of this position include:

·  Providing administrative support to the lobbying team in order to provide timely and accurate reports, position papers, testimony, fax/emailing of legislative-related documents and correspondence to legislators, members and other constituency groups;

·  Assisting in the production of a weekly legislative report during the General Assembly session under the supervision of the lobbying team;

·  Assist in drafting content for the weekly legislative report during the General Assembly session;

·  Supporting the Legislative, and other policy committees of the Maryland Chamber with regard to preparing, updating, and maintaining committee lists, agendas, meeting notices, RSVPs, materials and correspondence;

·  Ensuring and maintaining current and accurate database information for the legislative and executive branches of government;

·  Maintaining the database and office files on all pieces of legislation reviewed by the Chamber;

·  Posting Legislative Committee meeting agendas, consent calendars, reports, and related items on the Chamber’s website, and maintaining committee attendance records;

·  Assisting with the coordination and management of all legislative and some other special events, including but not limited to the Annual Business Day in Annapolis, Annual Congressional Event and Annual Business Policy Conference;

·  Other duties as assigned.

Skills Required

The Legislative Assistant should have outstanding computer skills, including database management, good writing skills as well as a strong ability to work within strict timelines, under pressure and with a wide variety of personalities. A professional demeanor coupled with a good work ethic. A general understanding of the legislative process is preferred.

Salary and Benefits

Depending upon experience, the Legislative Assistant position salary ranges from upper $30’s to mid $40 with benefits including medical benefits, 401 K and employer provided parking in historic Annapolis.
