Objectives:

Our students will be equipped to meet/exceed expectations on the Social Studies Georgia Milestones Exam, and they will be foundationally prepared for their high school American Government, geography, civics and American History courses. Goals include adherence to and fulfillment of the Douglas County School System’s mission statement as well as Turner Middle School’s expectations.

Course overview: 8th Grade Georgia Studies is a survey course of the state of Georgia. It addresses the social, historical, economic and political history of our state. Our course study extends from the first settlers to this region over 20,000 years ago, through GA’s current day residents, geography, politics, business, and society. The class is taught through the lens of Georgia as the thirteenth colony, a state in a new nation, a state in the confederacy, and again as a state in the United States. The basis for this course is the Georgia Standards of Excellence, www.georgiastandards.org. Current events and character Education are also a part of the curriculum.

All Students are expected to follow all classroom, school and district rules and policies. Violations will incur appropriately deemed disciplinary measures. Please note that tardiness to class and chewing gum will be an automatic afterschool detention.

Grading Scale:

90-100 = A

80-89 = B

71-79 = C

70 = D

0-69 = F

Grading Policy:

Summative Assessments 40%

Projects 15%

Classwork 30%

Homework 15%

Parent Meeting days and time:

Twenty Minute Intervals, 6th and 7th Periods, between 2:05-3:05 P.M. by appointment only; with the academic team that serves your child.

Tutoring Days: Will be Tuesdays from 3:50 – 5:00.

Absences: If a student misses school or class for any reason, he/she is totally responsible for getting permission and for coming back during 6th or 7th period to collect missing assignments on the day that they return to class or school.

Assignments and Make-up Work:

•  Homework is given and must be completed DAILY!!!

•  Students are expected to complete ALL assignments by the given due dates.

•  Exceptions will be allowed in the case of excused absences ONLY! Students should submit prior work upon their return to school. New assignments must be submitted within two days of the student’s return to school.

•  If a student misses a due date he/she will lose 25 points on that assignment, and he/she may ONLY turn in that work on the VERY NEXT school day.

•  NO LATE WORK will be accepted more than one day late.

•  Students will receive a zero if work is not completed and submitted within the time allowed.

•  Cheating is NOT allowed! A permanent zero will be given to all students involved in the act of cheating on any assignment or test.
