Successful Immunocytochemistry in Biomedical Research
AUTHOR: / Richard W. Burry, Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USAISBN-13: / 978-1-4419-1303-6
PAGES/ILLUS: / approx. 270 p., 82 illus., 8 in color, Hardcover
PRICE: / approx. $129.00
AVAILABLE (US): / November 2009
In biomedical research, because of a dramatic increase in productivity, immunocytochemistry has emerged as a major technique. The proposed book will provide the first practical guide to planning, performing, and evaluating immunocytochemical experiments.
The philosophy which separates this book from other books in this field is that it is practical, rather than academic. In looking at other important immunocytochemistry titles, the predominant orientation is academic, with the author attempting to comprehensively discuss the topic. The approach for Burry’s book is to discuss methods based on what works in animal research laboratories today, and focus only on the most productive methods.
An additional distinction with this proposed book is the focus on animal research and not human pathology. Processing for animal-based tissues takes about a third of the time and results in higher quality images. The focus of this book is on processing these animal research tissues for immunocytochemistry. Today, there are no technique books which are aimed at this user base. The purpose of this book is to show a novice how to do immunocytochemistry without engaging in a discussion of possible advanced methods.
SELLING POINTS:
- The first practical guide to planning, performing, and evaluating immunocytochemical experiments.
- Emphasis on practical, rather than academic, focusing only on the most productive methods
- Strong focus on animal research over human pathology, as processing for animal-based tissues takes about a third of the time and results in higher quality images

Attention deficit disorder, attention deficit hyperactive disorder, pervasive developmental disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, asperger's syndrome, and autism, to name but a few, may be viewed as points on a spectrum of developmental disabilities in which those points share features in common and possibly etiology as well, varying only in severity and in the primary anatomical region of dysfunctional activity. This text focuses on alterations of the normal development of the child. A working theory is presented based on what we know of the neurological and cognitive development in the context of evolution of the human species and its brain. In outlining our theory of developmental disabilities in evolutionary terms, the authors offer evidence to support the following notions: Bipedalism was the major reason for human neocortical evolution; Cognition evolved secondary and parallel to evolution of motricity; There exists an overlap of cognitive and motor symptoms; Lack of thalamo-cortical stimulation, not overstimulation, is a fundamental problem of developmental disabilities; A primary problem is dysfunctions of hemisphericity; Most conditions in this spectrum of disorders are the result of a right hemisphericity; Environment is a fundamental problem; All of these conditions are variations of the same problem; These problems are correctable; Hemisphere specific treatment is the key to success.

The initial identification of the Adenomatous polyposis coli (Apc) gene as the site of mutations in familial adenomatous polyposis (FA P) was described in 1992. A causal relationship between Apc mutations and intestinal tract tumours was confirmed three years later with the establishment of the Min mouse model. These mice are heterozygous for Apc and develop numerous intestinal tumours that mimic FA P. Subsequently, Apc has emerged as the most commonly mutated gene in colorectal cancer with reports varying between 50-80% of sporadic tumours carrying such mutations. The search for how mutations in Apc initiate and/or support progression of tumours in the intestinal tract has revealed that the Apc protein is a multifunctional participant in a diverse array of cellular functions.
SELLING POINTS:
- Provides an overview of the diverse functions performed by the Apc protein
- Almost every chapter includes a schematic of the Apc protein

Ensuring the availability of materials and goods is one of the major responsibilities and goals of inventory management, requiring various techniques such as mathematical modeling and computational methods. This unique textbook is devoted to models and solutions in inventory management.
It beginswith an introductory chapter in which the basics of inventory systems and mathematical assumptions for all models are grouped together, thereafter mathematical principles and applications are treated as they relate to one another. In this clearly organized systematic exposition, a unique balance is maintained between simplicity and rigor. Topics related to multiechelon systems are discussed in the latter chapters. An important feature of this work can be found in the beautiful examples in the final chapter in which a relationship between different kinds of real situations in industry and theoretical models are discussed in detail.
SELLING POINTS:
- More mathematical than some other texts in this field, less than others, striking a unique balance between simplicity and rigour
- Last chapter seeks to establish a relationship between different industrial situations and theortical models, with some examples discussed in detail
- User-friendly and well organized

Linear and Quadratic Models

Linear programming (LP), modeling, and optimization are very much the fundamentals of OR, and no academic program is complete without them. No matter how highly developed one’s LP skills are, however, if a fine appreciation for modeling isn’t developed to make the best use of those skills, then the truly ‘best solutions’ are often not realized, and efforts go wasted.
Katta Murty studied LP with George Dantzig, the father of linear programming, and has written the graduate-level solution to that problem. While maintaining the rigorous LP instruction required, Murty's new book is unique in his focus on developing modeling skills to support valid decision making for complex real world problems. He describes the approach as 'intelligent modeling and decision making' to emphasize the importance of employing thebest expression of actual problems and then applying the most computationally effective and efficient solution technique for that model.
SELLING POINTS:
- Presents advanced linear programming with a unique focus on modeling techniques
- Two chapters on entirely new algorithms and their results
- Author website with additional exercises and mathematical results of new algorithms

Functional verification is an art as much as a science. It requires not only creativity and cunning, but also a clear methodology to approach the problem. The Open Verification Methodology (OVM) is a leading-edge methodology for verifying designs at multiple levels of abstraction. It brings together ideas from electrical, systems, and software engineering to provide a complete methodology for verifying large scale System-on-Chip (SoC) designs. OVM defines an approach for developing testbench architectures so they are modular, configurable, and reusable. This book is designed to help both novice and experienced verification engineers master the OVM through extensive examples. It describes basic verification principles and explains the essentials of transaction-level modeling (TLM). It leads readers from a simple connection of a producer and a consumer through complete self-checking testbenches. It explains construction techniques for building configurable, reusable testbench components and how to use TLM to communicate between them.
SELLING POINTS:
- Offers a must-have reference to the Open Verification Methodology (OVM)
- Provides numerous, complete, working examples that illustrate the key points in the text and readers can use as templates in their own work

Probability, Random Processes, and Ergodic Properties is for mathematically inclined information/communication theorists and people working in signal processing. It will also interest those working with random or stochastic processes, including mathematicians, statisticians, and economists.Much of the material has been rearranged and revised for pedagogical reasons. The original first chapter has been split in order to allow a more thorough treatment of basic probability before tackling random processes and dynamical systems.
The final chapter has been broken into two pieces to provide separate emphasis on process metrics and the ergodic decomposition of affine functionals. Many classic inequalities are now incorporated into the text, along with proofs; and many citations have been added.
SELLING POINTS:
- Complete tour of book and guidelines for use given in Introduction, so readers can see at a glance the topics of interest
- Structures the mathematics for an engineering audience with proofs and interpretations from the point of view of signal modeling, processing, and coding
