VALVES SHALL BE MANIPULATED SO THAT THE STRONG CHLORINE SOLUTION IN THE LINE BEING TREATED WILL NOT FLOW BACK INTO THE LINE SUPPLYING THE WATER. BACKFLOW PREVENTERS SHALL BE USED IF NECESSARY. ALL VALVES IN TEST SECTION SHALL BE FULLY OPERATED.

Testing of non-pressure, gravity flow pipes, whether above or below ground, may be accomplished by closing all openings below the top of the section to be tested. For test purposes, provide a means to raise the water level to a height of at least 3-5 feet above the highest point in the line being tested. The water level should be maintained for a time long enough to determine if leaks are present. If it is impractical to raise the water level as suggested, the line can be pressurized with low pressure water or air. Normally, pressure should not exceed 5-10 psi over a time period of 5-10 minutes.
