Course Description:

Algebra IICollege Prep – Grade 11 wt. 1.0 – 1 credit (prerequisite: Geometry)

This course will be investigating and exploring graphs of linear, exponential, and polynomial functions. The topics of study include: development of strategies for understanding sequences and equivalence, solving equations and inequalities, solving systems of linear equations and linear inequalities involving two to three variables, introduction to matrices and using them to solve problems, developing an understanding of probability involving permutations and combinations.

Course Competencies/ Learning Objectives

Students who successfully complete Algebra IIwill be competent in the following areas:

  • Solve equations in function notation
  • Find points of intersection using multiple representations
  • Recognize and work with families of functions
  • Identify and generate arithmetic and geometric sequences
  • Solve expressions for equivalence

Student Evaluation

The grading system for the Mathematics Department at Academy Park High School is as follows:

The above areas will be used as the basis for 80% of your grade per semester. The midterm and/or final exam will constitute the remaining 20% of your grade per semester.

Tests- 40%

Quizzes- 20%

Classwork- 10%

Attendance & Participation- 20% (school wide)

Homework- 10% (school wide)

Attendance Policy

Regular and prompt class attendance is an essential part of the educational experience. Academy Park High School expects students to exercise good judgment regarding attendance and absences. Students will accept full responsibility for ensuring their work does not suffer because of absences. All students are expected to attend every scheduled class on time. Exceptions may be made for illness and valid emergencies.

  6. No eating, drinking, cell phones, or ipods permitted in the classroom (SCHOOL WIDE)

Class Requirements

Homework will be given approximately four days a week; it will often come in the form of classwork that was not completed that day. It will be collected in the beginning of class the day it is due. It is YOUR responsibility to complete homework assignments. You will be given the opportunity to make up 3 homework assignments at the end of the marking period if they were not completed.

If you are absent it is your responsibility to make up assignments and/or tests when you return. Please see me for any work you may have missed. You will have one week to make up the assignments or they will turn into zeros. It is your responsibility to come after school to catch up on missed work from your absences.

Plagiarism, Cheating, and Academic Integrity

Plagiarism is the practice of copying words, sentences, images, or ideas for use in written or oral assessments without giving proper credit to the source. Cheating is defined as the giving or receiving of illegal help on anything that has been determined by the teacher to be an individual effort. Both are considered serious offenses and will significantly affect your course grade. Please refer to the Student Code of Conduct booklet for additional information.

Methodology

A combination of lecture, class discussion, presentations, videos, cooperative learning, and problem-based learning will be used in this course. Grades will be determined by the satisfactory and timely completion of assignments. The grade of each assignment is based on the prerequisite given for each assignment.
