You are required by law to register with the Residents’ Registration Office in Magdeburg within one week after arrival.

You do not need to register personally with the Aliens’ Registration

Office as your documents will automatically be forwarded from the

Residents’ Registration Office to the Aliens’ Registration Office.

Registration with the Residents’ Registration Office is an essential precondition for further formalities. After having registered, you will get a Confirmation of Registration (Meldebescheinigung) and (a few days later by post) a so called “free movement” certificate (Freizügigkeitsbescheinigung) which is valid for your study period in Magdeburg. This document is important as it confirms that you are an EUcitizen living legally in Germany. Also, you will be asked for it if you intend to take up employment.

At the Residents’ Registration Office you need to provide (subject to change):

  • Registration form
  • Passport/ identity card
  • 1 biometric passport photo

(This is a passport photo which allows the comparison with your face by computer. You can obtain such a picture at many photographers in Magdeburg. It costs about € 10. It is also possible to get a biometric photo directly at the registration office in a photo machine, the photoscost about 6,00 € (for 4 photos)).

  • Confirmation of Enrolment or certificate of International Office that you will be enrolled at the Hochschule(you will get it after your arrival)
  • Your address in Germany (including room number if you live in a hall of residence), tenancy agreement and copy

Please make sure that right after your arrival you will bring your name on to your post box as well as on your doorbell as you are going to receive letters from the Residents’ Registration Office.
