New MCN Manager in Post
The Diabetes MCN has a new Manager, who will be familiar to many people in the Diabetes community – Lorraine Urquhart. Lorraine joined us in the summer, following Susan Pellegrom’s departure.
Lorraine has set up the very successful Retinal Screening Programme and will combine her work in Retinal Screening and SCI-DC with her new MCN role. We wish Lorraine every success in her new post.

Education and Training Courses:
“Supporting Diabetes Self Care – Train the Trainer” The Diabetes MCN and Self Care Project have secured funding from the Endowment Fund to support approximately 70 professionals through a Diabetes Self Care – Train the Trainer Package. This will enable practice based professionals to roll out training to patients with type 2 diabetes throughout Grampian. The course will be delivered by local professionals and will be tailored to meet the needs of the Grampian population incorporating local good practice. The training received on this course will equip practice based staff to take a self care educating/supporting approach when dealing with all patients not just diabetic patients.
Backfill and expenses will be offered to participants to help practices support staff to attend this training. It is expected that 10 courses will be run over the next year. For further information please contact Lorraine Urquhart Diabetes MCN Project Manager at or Linda Duthie, Self Care Project Manager at .
“Advanced Management of Type 2 Diabetes: Managing the Change from Oral Hypoglycaemic Agents to Insulin” has been running for some months. Courses are planned right through next year. Please contact your DSN to find out more or to book a place, but places on these courses book very quickly, so don’t delay – secure your place early to avoid disappointment.
Carbohydrate Counting:
This popular ½ day course for people with Type 1 diabetes on a basal bolus regime isbooked and run by the Dietetic Teams and courses are available in Aberdeen and in Elgin.
Tandoori Chicken:
2 chicken breast fillets, skin removed
(1 per portion) or Chicken thighs, skin removed (2 per portion)
2 teaspoons tandoori powder
2 tablespoons low fat natural yoghurt
1 tablespoon olive oil
a squeeze of lemon juice
Mix together the tandoori powder, yoghurt, olive oil and lemon juice. Make a few slashes with a knife in each piece of chicken. Spread the tandoori mixture over the chicken. Place in the fridge for a few hours before cooking. (This stage can be omitted but it gives the chicken more time to take up the flavour). Bake at 180oC for 20-25 minutes.
This is particularly good served with boiled brown rice and a fresh leafy green salad. / Diabetes Information Sessions for Carers:
With the rising incidence of Type 2 diabetes in older people who are largely cared for in their own homes, it was felt there was a gap in education provision.
This is a new venture to provide some information on diabetes aimed specifically at Carers. The first sessions will be aimed at the 360+ Carers employed by AberdeenCity
Council but it is planned to extend these to other areas. Carers are asked to contact their Managers to arrange to attend these sessions.
Dates and times for all of these Courses are given on the Diabetes Website. Speakers and venues will be added as details are finalised.
Cookery Demonstrations:
Since January 2007 a programme of very well attended cookery demonstrations has been offered. The final one for the year will take place in the Seminar Room at the Aberdeen Clinic, on the 11th December 2007.
The demonstrations are presented by Beth Bruce-Gardner a partner of the “Friendly Food” catering company and facilitated by the Dietitians.
The Clinic has agreed to fund a further 10 demonstrations in 2008. Dates have yet to be confirmed, but will be advertised in local media and at the Clinic and can be booked by telephoning 555491 at that time.
Recipes presented include the following:
