Cool Tools Lesson Plan

Universal Expectation: Safe, Responsible, Respectful

Name of the Skill/Setting: Class Dismissal

Procedures:
1. 2 minute announcement will be made. “You have 2 minutes to wrap up what you are working on and gather your things for dismissal.”
2. 10 minutes count down. At the end of the count down, things should be gathered, and you should be seated quietly.
3. Mr. Zorro will stand by the door and dismiss by groups. (Groups can develop their own name.)
4. When you group is called, gather your things, push in your chair and quietly line up in your assigned line.
5. Mr. Zorro will dismiss lines when they are lined up in a quiet and orderly manner.

Purpose of the lesson/Why it’s important:

Why is it important to wrap up your work and gather your things within the 2 minute prep time?

Why is important to be ready to be dismissed at the end of the 10 second count down?

Why is important to be quiet during dismissal? To walk to the line? To line up in an orderly way?

Why is it important to push in your chair?

Teaching Examples:
1. You know you will not finish the problem you are working on in the 2 minute prep time. You should….
2. What should you do when your friend wants to talk to you during the 10 second count down?
3. What should you do if someone bumps into you when lining up?
4. What should you do when your friend wants to talk with you in line? What is a respectful response?
Kid Activities/Role-Plays:
1. Have 1 group model the procedure beginning with the 2 minute prep time.
Have the class point out what they did well. Have them point out how they could do better.
2. Have another class model, if needed.
Follow-Up Reinforcement Activities:
Goal is to complete dismissal procedure in 2 minutes. It is assumed that every time you do this, you save 3 minutes of learning time.
For every 6 minutes that save, can earn 3 minutes of social time. That means the class can earn up to 15 minutes a week.
Must collect 10 minutes to redeem.
Can roll over up to 20 minutes, then must redeem.
