Narrow Gauge Locomotive Works, Harbin

This works mostly repairs locos for the forestry railways in Manchuria. We were told that they build about 40-70 new steam locos a year. However it is possible that these are assembled here from parts built elsewhere. It is also possible that at least some of these "new" locos are in fact rebuilds. The some of the locos we saw under repair were being stripped right down and being completely rebuilt, and these rebuilds might be officially classed as new locos. 202 and other locos were under repair in the works, with Z6-01012 being steamed. 05, 007 & 50010 were at the s.g. connection, waiting to be loaded onto main-line wagons for shipment their destination. Also there was Kh4-02, which was dumped in a very rusty condition.

Forestry railway, Langxiang

This line runs on the south bank of the river, for some distance west of the town, before turning south into the mountains. On this stretch the China Rail mainline to Harbin runs parallel to the forestry line, on the north bank of the river.

There are also at least two bus-type passenger railcars, plus some small motors for track work and other duties.

30/10/1987

Forestry railway, Tieli, between Nancha & Harbin

We rode out on this line for about 40km and saw timber trains coming in as well as a bus-type passenger railcar. We were given the following information about the line:-

230km of track, built by the Japanese in 1940-42

15 steam and 16 diesels (diesels are probably mostly railcars)

420 wagons and 10 passenger coaches

15 kg/m rail weight; 500,000 cubic metres of timber per year.

Fushun Mining Administration, Fushun

This big industrial complex is based on coal mining, mostly from the opencast West Open Pit Mine. This pit is 6.6km long, 2km wide, and 300m deep and was started in 1914. The coal seam is 40-120m thick, with an average of 118m, and production is about 3,600,000 tonnes per year. The rail system has over 500km of track, with electric locos used for the main work, and steam mostly used for maintenance work.

The main loco workshops are the Steel Checking Factory, where there are steam and electric shops and sheds. There is also a steam service point, with watering and coaling facilities, at Xin Sheng Qiao.

Tangshan Loco Works, Tangshan

This works was started about 1881 and is still building steam locos. They build about 100 locos per year, mainly class SY. The SY2 class of metre gauge locos were built until 1985. Standard & metre gauge coaches are also built here, and repairs are carried out on diesel locos. During our visit the works was building SY class 282's of the 1580-90 batch and SY 1582, 1585 & 1589 were noted as just finished. The works shunters were YJ104 (2-6-2) and SY 1105 (2-8-2).

Tangshan Coal Mine, Tangshan

This mine consists of the Old & New Shafts. Old Shaft is in the south-west part of the city. There is a line of about 3-4km from there to the New Shaft, which is to the west-south-west of the city. There is a miner's passenger train over this line, consisting of three coaches, usually hauled by SY 0964. This loco has been fitted with a "skyline" casing and smoke deflectors! The loco shed and workshops are at Old Shaft and this appears to be used for coal winding, with New Shaft mainly used for material and man-hauling. The locos are in very good condition, and some carry "slogan" head-boards.

At Old Shaft is an extensive 450mm gauge system, which serves the wood yard and also connects with the underground system. The two diesels seen here are used on the surface lines, and are kept in a loco shed near the wood yard. There appear to be battery locos underground.

There is also an extensive 900mm gauge system at the New Shaft, which carries materials and serves the wood yard there. The narrow gauge loco shed is inside the wood yard, close to the point where the standard gauge line crosses the road.

Capital Steel Works, Beijing

This works was built in the 1930's, but has obviously been modernised quite recently. We were told that a lot of new diesels have come here recently, and so there is much less steam working. However we saw classes XK13 and SY at work. The XK13's were working not far from the main gate, at the ingot casting plant. There were taking ingot moulds from the casting shed to the stripping shed, and bringing back empties, and the action was busy here. The SY's were on slag workings at the blast furnaces.
