Training Committee Meeting Minutes
June 20, 2013 1:00 pm at Thompson Library Room 359
Attendees: Misty, Lisa, Cheryl, Quanetta, Kevlin, Melanie, Sherab, Dan
Buckeye Box Training
The group discussed the upcoming Buckeye Box training workshop, which will be held in THO 150A on Thursday, June 26. The workshop is a “train the trainer” type of event, in which Training Committee members will receive instruction that they can then pass on to the rest of the Libraries staff at a later event. However, other interested parties are welcome. Lisa asked that Lauren and Kelly from Admin be invited as well.
Outlook training
- Melanie reported that she mentioned Outlook training with Meris Mandernach, who volunteered to give instruction, including advanced functions of Outlook. Cheryl said she would find a list of training points that the Computer Workshop had sent her when she was investigating various training venues, and that she would send it to Melanie to help figure out what to offer at a session.
Training and development priorities
The group went through the list of training priorities that were gleaned from the original survey of supervisors and from the exercise done at Admin Plus. The group identified four main areas to prioritize for training activities:
- Project management
- Supervisory skills
- Technical training
- Writing skills
The group then discussed how to determine which activities to offer in each category:
- Should the training be led by a Libraries staff member, or an OSU entity or an outside vendor?
- Will it appeal to large groups or just to individuals or small groups?
- Should be be a stand-alone event or part of a suite of activities?
- Is there an online alternative or must it be delivered in person?
- Should it be an all-day event, a brown-bag lunch seminar or workshop lasting a few hours?
Since there are so many factors to consider, the group decided that the committee should be divided into subgroups for each category, which would tackle all of the considerations and present a plan to the whole on how to proceed with that category. The subgroups are:
- Project management
- Misty
- Quanetta
- Sherab
- Supervisory skills
- Cheryl
- Greg
- Kevlin
- Technical training
- Amy
- Dan
- Melanie
- Writing
Lisa will handle this one with Kelly, who is the MAPS liaison. (Lisa had received very positive feedback from several faculty members who had taken a workshop through MAPS on writing skills for supervisors.)
The group decided that the first hour of the next meeting (July 18) will be for the subgroups to come up with a plan of attack for their category, then the last part of the meeting will consist of each subgroup presenting their plan to the whole committee for suggestions and revisions. Before the next meeting, Melanie will send out questions that each subgroup needs to consider before they meet.
Miscellaneous
- During the discussion on training and development, Cheryl reported that the Teaching and Learning committee Student Assistant Training Program had created a Carmen course for student assistants in Circulation and Reference through which they learn about preventing and resolving conflict resolution with patrons. Lisa asked if the T&L committee could create similar Carmen courses for students in security and the Business Office or even for staff members. She also suggested that the news about the new course be shared in NewsNotes; Cheryl said she would ask Karen Diaz about both suggestions.
- Quanetta reported she had taken two courses through the Office of Distance Education on using the iPad: One was directed at faculty and other teaching personnel about how to use the iPad in the classroom, and one was a workshop that had been arranged specifically for administrative personnel. She said she would give contact information to Dan to see if there’s a possibility of something being offered to Libraries personnel.
