AP German Contract
The AP German exam is difficult and demanding. You must commit to a considerable amount of independent study in addition to the regular required assignments. The course will teach you an enormous amount whether you receive a top grade or not, but you must be prepared to do outside work. In particular, you need to build your vocabulary and take every opportunity to listen to and speak the language. This is a college level course and you must learn from your mistakes. I am always there to help you, in or out of class, but I cannot learn your vocabulary/structures for you. Please read this contract carefully, sign and date it and have your parents sign it. During the first six weeks I will be able to tell whether you are putting forth the necessary effort. Talent and ability are not enough.
1. I promise to speak ONLY German in class and to practice speaking German out of class every day. I promise to come to class prepared and with a positive attitude. I promise to participate in all activities and to stay focused during every class session.
2. I promise to correct my homework (including rewriting essays) and make every effort to learn from my errors. I will not “pick and choose” which assignments are important and which are not.
3. I promise to be prepared to work with Herr Mays outside of class if necessary and be responsible for recording answers to oral questions in my own time.
4. I promise not to rush my foreign language assignments because another class is more demanding or its requirements are more immediate. I promise to plan my study to include enough daily time for German. I understand that reading and study assignments are just as important as written assignments.
5. I promise to do all written work in blue or black ink and in legible handwriting.
6. I promise to complete my work on time and make up all work after absences. I understand it is my responsibility to obtain assignments missed through absence.
7. I promise to spend at least 20 minutes daily learning new vocabulary and structures (grammar) and to try and incorporate these in oral and written work. I commit to learning at least 20 words/expressions each week and to review my vocabulary regularly.
8. I promise to do all out-of-class work without help from other students or online translators.
9. I promise to read as much German as possible outside of class. This includes the assigned texts as well as magazines, newspapers, etc. I promise to try my best to gain a general understanding of the text before going to the dictionary.
10. I promise to attend any extra sessions given by Herr Mays.
