Minutes of Meeting, Tuesday, May 13, 9am-10:09am

1.The Reverend Bernard O’Connor called the meeting to order and gave the invocation.

2.Approval of minutes of March 19, 2014 (Attachment). The minutes were approved.

3.Committee reports

General Education Core Curriculum Committee - Dr. Tahereh Alavi Hojjat

·  The committee met twice, and reviewed the rest of the assessment plans for EN.103 and PE activities courses. Upon completion feedback was sent to the faculty.

·  The committee also reviewed and approved two petitions for DeSales Experience courses.

·  The committee would like to thank the following faculty for successful submission of their assessment plans for EN.103 and PE activities: Mr. Hayes, Mr. Galente, Mr. Zaleski, Ms. McMichael, Ms. Batchelor; and for PE activities, Mr. Crampton, Ms. Miller, and Ms. Bryan.

·  In addition to 10 petitions that were approved last year, this year several faculty submitted petitions for DeSales Experience courses and the GECCC approved all of them. The committee is grateful to the entire faculty for supporting this program. The courses approved are as follows:

·  The committee approved new minor in TV/Film.

·  The Academic Appeals Meeting will occur on June 6. If any faculty members would like to communicate additional information on students, they can inform Dr. Wayne Turney.

4.Introduction of new faculty – Dr. Karen Walton, Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs

Dr. Walton introduced new faculty from the Division of Science and Health Care.

·  Dr. Sonya Echols, Associate Professor of Interprofessional Healthcare Education and Director of Healthcare Simulation

5.Voting on the topic for the August 2014 Dies Academicus - Dr. Brian Kane, Chair of the Academic Oversight Committee (Please see the email from Dr. Kane via Ms. Jean Lynch dated 5/8/14 at 10:38 a.m.)

·  The faculty voted for “Why Tough Teachers Get Results,” The Wall Street Journal (September 27, 2013) for the August 2014 Dies Academicus.

6.Voting on Committee Membership – Dr. Sara Hayik, Chair of the Faculty Steering Committee. A list of committees and candidates was provided by Dr. Hayik before the faculty meeting.

7. Announcements

·  Fr. O’Connor – Announced that an organizational structure study was completed this year. A report will be issued in the summer of 2014.

·  Ms. Elizabeth Rosa – Encouraged faculty to communicate with her as Faculty Mentor.

·  Dr. Rodger Berg – Announced that Dr. Julie Himmelberger and her husband welcomed a baby girl.

·  Dr. Charles Job – Ethics Bowl is looking to expand the judge pool for the event, and accepting case submissions from LVAIC institutions.

·  Faculty member – Announced that the DeSales Dash for a Difference 5K will be held on June 21; all proceeds go to the DSU Free Clinic. The Clinic has also been recognized as a Free and Charitable Clinic.

·  Dr. Carol Mest – Announced that the Department of Nursing is hosting a showing of the documentary film, “The American Nurse: Healing America,” on May 15, 2014; students can attend for free and faculty for $5.

·  Fr. Peter Leonard – Announced that the Doctorate in Physical Therapy Program will not begin classes in May 2014. The program will continue the process to receive approval of its Application for Candidacy. Fr. Leonard invited faculty members to tour the facilities for the PT Program and to attend the Wills Hall University Community Gathering at 3 pm on May 13, 2014.

·  Dr. Chris Cocozza – Announced that the Division of Business went through a reaccreditation process and that it was successful.

·  Faculty Member – Announced that the Physician Assistant program will be sending their first student to Peru starting on June 1.

·  Brother Dan Wisniewski – Announced that two Department of Mathematics and Computer Science faculty members successfully defended their dissertations: Dr. Pranshu Gupta and Dr. Patricia Riola.

·  Mr. Patrick Mulcahy – Announcement of the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival shows for the summer of 2014.

·  Ms. Jennifer Suwak – Announced that the TV/Film Department is hosting 3-credit Summer Video Institute in late June/early July, 2014.
