From your Pastor

Well, ready or not, our annual celebration of Thanksgiving is happening this week! Just so you know, I’m definitely in the “not ready” categoryJ For some reason, the holiday just kinda snuck up on me and I’m finding it a stretch to wrap my mind around the fact that the month of November is slipping away. In any case, these are blessed days in which we all have the chance to stop and be deliberate in expressing our gratitude to God and to family and friends for the life and love they bring into our lives. I am so grateful to you for the kindness and generosity you have shown me this year; know that I will remember your intentions at Mass on Thanksgiving Day. In closing, I thought I would include a thought I discovered some years back that might.

When we say, "Thank you" to people, they usually make some response. If God did that, what would He say? Some today say, "No problem," which sounds as if they would not have done it if the gesture had been a problem. Of course, it is no problem to God, but that seems a bit casual and off-putting. We say, "You're welcome," which effectively means “you are under no obligation.” But we always are under obligations while God never is. In Spanish, De nada means "It's nothing." God's gifts are never nothing and never to be taken lightly. In Greek, Para Kalo means "With pleasure." In Romanian, Cumple Cherie means "With pleasure." God might say that. If God loves a cheerful giver, then we must assume He Himself is a cheerful Giver. The Hungarians have the best response: Szeveshan, which means "From the heart." God never gives grudgingly. It is always from His heart.

Surprisingly, this little passage did not include the Italian response. When people say, “thank you,” “Grazie” the normal response is “Prego” from the verb pregare which literally means “I pray” as in I pray for you. And I do…

Have a blessed week, and a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Pray for our Parishioners, Adam Amato, Taylor Donner, Jamie Brueggemann Murphy & Michael Murphy serving in the Armed Forces
