Overview

Job Title: Events Lead

Reports to: Medical Student Group (MSG) Chair

Term: One year, but this may be flexible

Eligibility criteria

Please note that all the following criteria must be fulfilled in order to be eligible to apply, further details of the personal specification can be found with each of the job descriptions.

All applicants must:

1.  Attend a UK medical or dental school, and not be in their final year (i.e. must NOT have completed medical/dental school training before September 2016)

2.  Be a current member of FMLM[1]

Workstream overview

This role has the overall aim of delivering practical opportunities to medical students interested in medical leadership and management. In this way, we hope to provide interested students with training and insights into future leadership roles.

The Medical Student Group (MSG) is a group of students selected by the FMLM to represent the Faculty at the student level. Positions and responsibilities in the MSG are shown in the Appendix.

Job description

The successful applicant will have the responsibility of designing and developing scalable materials for workshops across the country. Your work will be central to the greatest engagement students have with the Faculty, and is extremely important in ensuring the Faculty can offer a real benefit to students in their training. Specifically, the role involves:

1.  Working with Regional leads to design and deliver student-focused activities at regional conferences.

2.  Leading student involvement in the national conference, the highlight of the year for the FMLM.

3.  Developing an events bank, to create resources for university Medical Leadership and Management (MLM) societies to run independent events.

4.  Supporting the work of other leads, specifically:

a.  Reviewing prize submissions in the FMLM Essay Prize

b.  Supporting research activities (with authorship on any publication).

5. Pioneering fora encouraging underrepresented groups to lead.

In addition to the roles listed above, the Events lead is expected to:

1.  Attend quarterly WebEx and face-to-face meetings with fellow Medical Student Group committee members. The location of these meetings will vary depending on the team constituents.

2.  Help shape the long-term outlook for the Workstream and will constantly be exploring new ideas for the Workstream.

3.  Report back to the MSG chair on progress via email or telephone/text.

Your performance will be assessed on the following specific objectives:

1.  Student workshops at FMLM conferences in 2016-17.

2.  Complete FMLM-branded events bank of key themes in MLM.

Essential / Desirable
Academic/ Professional / ·  Currently a medical or dental student
·  Must NOT have completed medical/dental school training before September 2016
·  Member of FMLM
·  Signed Memorandum of Understanding / ·  Intercalated BSc in management/clinical leadership*
·  Internship/work experience in management/clinical leadership
·  Demonstrates commitment to medical education / peer teaching.
·  Familiar with submitting and writing abstracts, posters or papers.
Knowledge / ·  Good understanding of the structure and vision of the MSG
·  An understanding of the structure and vision of the FMLM / ·  Understanding of wider leadership agenda
·  Insight into the issues facing the UK health system
Interests / ·  An enthusiasm for medical leadership and management issues and motivation to enhance its understanding.
·  Interested in medical education on a national and local level. / ·  Demonstrates on going interest in leadership and management e.g. intercalated BSc*, society involvement etc.
·  A track record of consistent involvement in management and leadership projects
Skills / ·  Able to create a vision and set direction for projects
·  Able to deliver the strategy to achieve specific goals

·  A basic knowledge of project management. / ·  Experience of managing and leading teams to achieve specified goals and outcomes.

*NB whilst an intercalated BSc degree in a relevant area is desirable, it is not a requirement for the role.
