Gulf of Mexico Speech Career Development Events

Purpose: The Gulf of Mexico Speech program is designed to promote citizen concern and student awareness of the problems facing the Gulf of Mexico and the states that border the Gulf. The program is also designed to involve students in preparing and delivering a speech related to those problems.

Objectives:

  1. To promote stewardship and create public awareness of the environmental issues concerning the Gulf of Mexico.
  1. To educate the members of the FFA on the Gulf of Mexico environmental issues, the Gulf of Mexico watershed and major river basins and these connecting water bodies functioning as an ecosystem.
  1. To promote youth leadership in environmental and agricultural issues.
  1. To provide community opportunities for FFA members to share Gulf of Mexico related environmental concerns with agricultural, environmental, educational, and industrial groups.
  1. To create an FFA Gulf of Mexico ambassadorship program to the FFA state Conventions in the 31 State Gulf Basin drainage areas.

Rules and Regulations:

  1. All general rules apply except as indicated in the specific rules of this career development event.
  1. Eliminations for the Gulf of Mexico Speech will be held in conjunction with the eliminations at each level of the Prepared and Extemporaneous Speech Career Development Events.
  1. A student may enter the Gulf of Mexico Speech and the Prepared Speaking Career Development Event as long as the speech manuscripts are significantly different.
  1. The subject of the Gulf of Mexico Speech must deal with Gulf issues and/or environmental challenges facing the Gulf of Mexico Program. (Rev. 96)
  1. The state career development event will be held at the state convention. Manuscripts must be submitted by 5:00 on the day of convention registration.
  1. All other rules regulating the Prepared Speaking Career Development Event will apply to the Gulf of Mexico regarding length, bibliography, and preparation.
  1. The top four competitors from Sub-District and District competitions will move on to the Area competition. The top two competitors from Area will advance to the State competition. Revised 2010
