Its prevalence is highest in India that is, 30% adult male, 45% adult female in reproductive age, 80% pregnant females and 60% children are having iron deficiency. One of the important contributing reasons for iron deficiency is self imposed an improperly dietary restriction predominantly cereal- based diet which is poor in green leafy vegetables. And deficiency of vitamin-C is common cause of iron deficiency anaemia in our country.1,2

Madhura triphala3which is mentioned for the first time by Narahari pandit in his Raj nighantu will be best to treat iron deficiency anaemia. It contains equal quantity of fruits of 1)Draksha, 2) Kharjura, 3) Ghambhari, among this Draksha which is the fair source of ironand other minerals, vitamin C, Riboflavin, carotene; Kharjura contains protein, calcium, Vitamin B & C,fibers and Ghambhari contains buteric acid, tartaric acid etc.4,5All ingredients are having Madhura rasa, Madhura Vipaka, and Shita virya and are Brumhana. All are Dhatu-Kshayahara and useful in Pitta-Raktaja conditions.6,7,8The contents of Madhura tripahala are easily available, palatable to all and are without adverse effects as seen during oral iron therapy.
