Tuesday, August 9

Meet for lunch at 12:30 pm at Cham’s Lebanese Restaurant, 610 Market St., Parkersburg. Dawn Weidner, Recycling Assistant/Education Coordinator for the City of Parkersburg will meet with members for lunch to describe the program.

At 1:30, the group will proceed to the recycling center for a tour. Note the following:

·  If you plan to go to Cham’s for lunch, please call or email Nancy Novak so that enough table space is available. Call 304-295-8215 or email

·  Those who don’t come for lunch can meet at the recycling center at 1:30 pm for the tour.

·  The recycling center is located on 24th St. near the Memorial toll bridge.

Directions: Take the approach to the bridge and make the right turn shortly before the toll booths onto Garfield Ave. (as if going to the Park Shopping Center), and then the first left turn next to the mini-warehouses. The street will become gravel and end at the recycling center. See map on page 2.

The September meeting will feature Jean Ambrose of the Civics Literacy Council.

The Oct 7 meeting is in cooperation with AARP and will be an update on implementation of the Affordable Health Care Act in WV, presented by Judy Peascoe.

The Oct. 24 education consensus meeting is part of the LWVUS study of the role of the federal government in education. Go to www.lwv.org for background reading material and more information about the study.

Gubernatorial Election

The special election for WV Governor will be held on Tuesday, October 4. There will be 5 candidates on the ballot, Bill Maloney, Republican; Earl Ray Tomblin, Democrat; Bob Henry Baber, Mountain; Marla Ingels, Independent; Harry Bertram, American Third Position. The LWVWV will be publishing a voters guide before the election, which will also be posted online at www.lwvwv.org.

A local levy election will also be voted on that day in Wood County, a combined special levy to provide funds for the Wood County Airport, the Parkersburg/Wood County Library, and the local Veteran’s Museum.

Legislative Redistricting

WV House and Senate committees have been at work on redistricting WV. Proposals may be brought out at a special session following legislative interim meetings August 1-3.
