American Society for Microbiology

Description: Minority Undergraduate Research Fellowship is aimed at highly competitive minority undergraduate students who wish to and have demonstrated the ability to pursue graduate careers in microbiology. Students will conduct full time summer research with an ASM member at any US institution other than their own. Funding available up to $4500.

Eligibility: Underrepresented minority group in the sciences as well as a US citizen or permanent resident. Student also must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate. Must be either a freshman with college level research experience or a sophomore, junior or senior who will not graduate before the completion of the program. Applicants must also have taken intro courses in Biology, Chemistry and preferably Microbiology. Lab research experience is also desirable.

Duration: 8-12 weeks

Description: Summer Medical and Research Training Program (SMART) offers student-mentor pairing with Baylor scientists from basic science and clinical research departments, specially designed seminar programs, physician shadowing, career counseling, and social and cultural activities. Eligibility: Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Applicants who graduate before or during the program will not be eligible. No previous research experience is required, except of current freshmen.

Description: Robert T. Wallace Undergraduate Research Internship matches students with Academy scientists to work on specific research projects. Interns will have the opportunity to learn about a specific group of organisms, be involved in original scientific research and appreciate the role of a natural history museum in research and education. Some travel expenses will be reimbursed and students will receive a stipend of $3,500 for internship (plus $1,500 housing allowance).

Description: Summer Undergraduate Research Program in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics will enable students to carry out a research project under the guidance of a faculty member, attend departmental seminars, meet weekly with members of the faculty of the biomedical science departments, and present their research results at the end of the summer.

Eligibility: Program is offered to a limited number of advanced undergraduates (usually juniors, sometimes advanced sophomores are granted exception) who would like the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a scientific environment and explore the possibility of a biomedical research career. Science majors preferred.

Duration: 8-10 weeks

The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR)

Description: The Institute for Genomic Research is a not-for-profit research institute with interests in structural, functional and comparative analysis of genomes and gene products. The summer fellowship program provides an environment the enables hands-on science training in methods in molecular biology, informatics and DNA sequencing. Each fellow will be assigned a mentor who is a member of the Institute’s faculty. The mentor will have responsibility for training the fellow and assigning, supervising and reviewing the fellow’s work Undergraduate fellows will receive between $600-$710 stipend bi-weekly.
Eligibility: All applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. Students must have completed course work in Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics or Computer Science, or have an equivalent background. A “B” average both overall and in science courses is required.

Description: The Summer Research Early Identification Program allows undergraduate students under the guidance of a faculty or private sector research mentor gaining theoretical knowledge and practical training in research and scientific experimentation. Accepted students receive round-trip travel, room, board and a stipend. The amount of the stipend varies by institution.

Eligibility: Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or better; completed two semesters and have at least one semester remaining of their undergraduate education; demonstrated interest and potential to pursue graduate study; United States citizenship or permanent resident status. Students from traditionally underrepresented groups in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities, to consider research careers in academia, business, or the public sector are encouraged to apply.
