Objectives/Outcomes (explicitly stated, how will you know?):

The objective of Project SWAG is to have more teachers, administrators, school staff, community members and students learn more about the achievement gap and what can students in partnership with adults do about it.

SWAG stands for Students Working on the Achievement Gap. The project is initiated by the Youth Leadership Council (YLC). SWAG has multiple parts and this proposal is to request funding to help us reach out to more groups through workshops and help us grow the cross-age mentoring program.

During the 2011-2012 school year, the YLC initiated Project SWAG which had three parts. The first part was a peer workshop which was implemented on MLK Day. The goal was to learn from one another about the achievement gap through simulations led by the YLC members. The second part was a cross-age mentoring program which 40 high school students made a one-on-one impact with 40 elementary students. The program was once per week for seven weeks and provided reading support and enrichment activities that the mentors and mentees did together. The third part was to create a video to educate others about the achievement gap. The hope for the video was to show it to different community and school groups.

Because of Project SWAG’s success, the YLC students want to grow Project SWAG in two ways for the 2012-2013 school year:

1)  Now that the SWAG video is complete, the YLC is interested in developing a workshop that goes with it and present it at staff development days, community or parent meetings and youth leadership conferences. The outcome is to have over 1,000 people view the video, and have direct training to impact at least 100 staff and 100 students. We will have a survey that the participants will complete to show an increase in cross-cultural competence and interaction.

2)  Now that we have piloted the Cross-Age Mentoring program for seven weeks in Spring 2012, we would like to increase our impact by adding a fall semester. This is due to the requests from teachers and parents from our surveys. In addition, in partnership with our YLC/SWAG Advisors, we will track the elementary students’ progress through grades, MCA scores and/or a report from their teacher. We will also track the high school mentors progress as well.

We will complete a report at the end of the year which will include the workshop participants’ responses and the cross-age mentoring progress results.

How does this program align with Educational Equity Alliance goals (establish a clear connection)?

The workshops will align with the last two goals of the EEA: a) Increase intercultural competency of staff, students, and board members, and b) Increase opportunities cross- cultural interactions and opportunities for integrated learning environments. Our workshop about the achievement gap will present the various factors that the YLC learned: Home, background, teachers, schools and the individual. The workshop includes the students’ experiences, peer stories and training that they have received by the National Youth Leadership Council. We will also show this through survey for the participants to fill out.

The cross-age mentoring program will align with the first goal of: Student achievement - To foster student success and learning with innovative initiatives while identifying and addressing the systematic barriers that impede academic success. In partnership with the YLC/SWAG Advisors, mentors’ and mentees’ progress will be tracked.

We want to grow Project SWAG the Workshops and Cross-Age Mentoring programs.

WORKSHOPS

We have three types of workshops.

1)  The first is “Youth Perspectives on the Achievement Gap” which is for-youth by-youth.

2)  The second workshop is in the process of being developed and it is titled “Youth & Adult partnership to create a successful mentoring program” which is geared for youth and their youth allies.

3)  The third workshop is also in the process of being developed and it is inspired by a College of St Catherine student who called her training / presentation to the faculty at St Kate’s, “My Wish.” This workshop’s main audience would be teachers, school staff and administrators. This would also be appropriate for community members and parents to learn more about how teachers and our school culture can impact the achievement gap.

We plan on finishing the two workshops at our YLC retreat in September. Below are our current planned trainings:
