1. Why was Jonas skipped? What is his Assignment? Jonas was skipped because he has been selected to be the next Receiver of Memory
2. What does Jonas notice about the Elder (the previous Receiver of Memory)?
Jonas notices that the man has the same pale eyes he and Gabriel have.
3. Explain the qualities necessary to be the Receiver of Memory. (Name AND explain each trait)
a. Intelligence and Courage which he’ll need in order to endure the physical pain he will experience.
b. Integrity- as he showed when apologized for taking the apple
c. In time, Jonas will gain wisdom.
d. The Capacity to See Beyond- (the color changes he notices)
4. Why does Jonas feel left out and “strange” after the ceremonies?
He realizes he won’t be sharing his assignment with anyone else, and even Asher is treating him differently: with respect.
5. What did Jonas’s parents say about the first Receiver of Memory?
It was a female and no one knows what happened except that she disappeared and that her name is Not to be Spoken which is a tremendous dishonor. This adds to Jonas’s uneasiness
6. Explain everything from Jonas’s Assignment folder, and explain his feelings about what it contains.
a. He can ask anyone any question he wants, even if it is considered rude, and they must answer him.
b. He is prohibited from discussing his dreams, or taking any medication to relieve pain he might experience.
c. He is not allowed to apply for Release.
d. He is not allowed to discuss his training with anyone.
e. He IS allowed to lie.
f. His troubled by this list. He is nervous about experiencing pain, but is even more uncomfortable about being able to lie. He wonders if any other members of the community are allowed to lie as well.
