Position overview

Responsible for delivery of approved VET programs in general construction and carpentry including:

·  Teaching, management and facilitation of culturally appropriate teaching and learning activities on site and on ‘live’ builds;

·  Mentoring and coaching inmate students;

·  Student assessments, maintenance of student records, supervision of students, and monitoring student progression;

·  Participate in post-release employment pathways for inmate students.

Detailed Statement of Duties

Teaching & Resource Development

1. Provide instruction and other training support to inmate students, including work placements, and their support and follow up.

2. Prepare, deliver and evaluate training activities and work site requirements in general construction and carpentry.

3. In cooperation with other staff, including NT Department of Correctional Services NTDCS), produce training, resource and assessment materials.

4. Participate in flexible course delivery strategies.

5. Advise students on and document assessments of student performance according to the Assessment Rules of Batchelor Institute.

Student Support

6. Liaise with Correctional Services to monitor and support student training progress.

7. Consult with BCS Program Manager and counsel inmate students on their training progress and recommend appropriate action.

8. Maintain close liaison with BCS and Correctional Services staff on inmate student requirements and progress.

Administration

9. Assist with student induction and enrolment.

10. Provide regular progress reports on building activities (including photographic evidence, daily site diaries and WHS compliance), as required. Participate in performance management and quality assurance of projects and programs.

11. Assist with work based staff orientation.

12.  Attend BCS meetings as required, and participate in quality assurance activities and programs.

13.  Participate in validation, moderation of units and course monitoring.

Advocacy

14.  Maintain positive professional relationships with inmate students and follow NTDCS guidelines and protocols.

Other

15.  Other duties within the range of skills normally associated with this designation, as directed.

Essential selection criteria

1.  A three (3) year qualification in general construction and carpentry and three (3) years’ experience relevant to this position.

2.  Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE 401011) for delivery in the VET sector, or ability to obtain same within 6 months.

3.  Demonstrated capacity to work effectively within the social, political and cultural environments of an industries sector of a prison communicate sensitively and effectively with Indigenous Australians.

4.  Demonstrated ability to contribute to the development of teaching and learning programs and resources in accordance with the relevant national training packages, responding effectively to the learning needs of adult Indigenous Australians.

5.  Demonstrated capacity to manage the administrative tasks related to this position, ability to be an effective member of a culturally diverse team, and work independently or under direct supervision.

6.  Must possess a Northern Territory ‘C’ class drivers licence with the ability to obtain an MR licence.

7.  Demonstrated commitment to undertake professional development activities.

8.  Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and application of Work Health Safety.
