The Crusades Gallery Walk Vocabulary

Directions: With your small group you will have 5 minutes at each station to write down the correct vocabulary term for the definition.

THE 1st CRUSADE

______- regime founded by Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan, long-time governor of Syria, after the end of the First Muslim Civil War in 661 AD. This caliphate was the one responsible for trying to invade Jerusalem after the Christian takeover.

______- was ultimately responsible for uniting the Christian faiths together to fight for Jerusalem after the Seljuk Turks invaded and took over the Holy Land. Promised anyone who fought in the 1st Crusade salvation.

______- are a major branch of the Oghuz Turks and a dynasty that ruled parts of Central Asia and the Middle East from the 11th to 14th centuries. This group of the Muslim Nations are the ones who initially invaded and conquered Jerusalem.

______- territories created after the 1st Crusade when Crusaders claimed territory. They are the Principality of Armenian Cilicia, County of Edessa, Principality of Antioch, and the County of Tripoli.

THE 2nd CRUSADE:

______- created and signed a peace treaty with neighboring Muslim nations to strengthen their fight against Crusaders.

______- The King of France during the 2nd Crusade. This is the 1st time we see the territory now known as France come to the aid of another European nation.

______- was the one responsible for calling all arms to fight again for the Holy Land of Jerusalem. Just like Pope Urban II he promised salvation for all those who fought in the Crusades.

______- a state that was created after the 1st Crusade that was the 1st to fall causing Pope Eugene III to call all Christians to come together and fight, once again, for the area surrounding Jerusalem.

THE 3rd CRUSADE:

______- king of England during the time of the 3rd crusade. On his way to fight in Jerusalem he died while in Constantinople causing him not to be a part of the fighting.

______- the first Sultan of Egypt and Syria; he fought against and withstood the 3rd Crusade. He eventually signed a peace treaty with Richard the Lionheart that would bring the 3rd Crusade to an end.

______- the king of Spain during the 3rd Crusade. Ended up not actually fighting in the 3rd Crusade.

______- military leader of England during the time of the 3rd Crusade, this man was given a fierce nickname because at the age of 16 he was leading his own army and showed great successes. Also was named King of England during the Crusades due to the death of Henry II on their way to Constantinople.

THE 4th CRUSADE:

______- this event occurred when Crusaders decided not to go to Jerusalem but rather attack the capitol city of the Byzantine Empire which would cause the Byzantine Empire to split.

______- person responsible for sending the 4th Crusade to reconquer the Holy Land of Jerusalem. Once again promised salvation for those who fought against the Muslim Nations.

______- primary Muslim nation during the time of the 4th Crusade. They were responsible for the ultimate end of the Byzantine Empire and what was left of the Roman Empire. This group will remain in power until WWI.

______- a term given at the end of the 4th Crusade that caused a split between Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians. This occurred because the Crusades had lost it’s “appeal” of being a war to regain land for God due to the Siege of Constantinople.
