Writing Tips

When writing sentences or simple stories at home we would like for you to continue to use the strategies we use at school. Let me explain how we do writing in our classroom.

First, I am looking for simple sentences that your child can write on their own by sounding out what they hear. They need to have at least 3 sentences (B-beginning, M-middle, E-end). Here are some sentence starters we have worked on at school and are posted on the board:

BeginningMiddle

“I see a ______.”“It is ______.”

“I made a ______.”“My _____ is ______.”

“Look at my ______.”“The _____ is ______.”

Ending

“I like my ______.”

“I do not like ______.”

When the students write sentences I am not looking for perfect spelling (except for the sight words we have learned). What I am looking for is that they sound out (stretch) the word and write the sound they hear. For example, if your child wanted to write “I like to play soccer.”- this is what I would expect from most: “I like to plascr.” This shows us they wrote what they heard (like the word “play”- you do not hear “y” at the end unless you know how to spell it).

Please do not write the sentences for your child to copy. We know what they are capable of doing in the classroom and we do not do this for them. If you do this at home, you are only hurting your child. If you need more explaining about this, please feel free to come out to school so I can show you one on one. Please make sure your child writes the letters correct as well as neat. Also, they need to have spaces between their words and periods at the end of their sentences. I want you to help and assist your child with their homework but please do no do it for them.

**We have a great group of kids and we are very proud of their hard work!!  We know each child is different, so we do not expect the same from each child.
