PUSH AND PULL FACTORS

Please list four Push Factors and four Pull Factors. Illustrate each factor.

  • The movement of goods from place to place is called: TRADE.

Ø  Countries buy and sell goods to one another.

Ø  Resources are not distributed evenly over the earth’s surface.

Ø  Many countries may have an abundance of one resource while other countries may not have it.

Ø  These resources could include:

1. Raw materials (natural resources), 2. Manufactured goods (products), 3. Information or services (human resources).

4. Technology or machinery (capital resources)

Ø  Countries sell their excess resources. When a country ships a good out, that good is called an export.

Ø  When a country buys a good and brings it into the country, that good is called an import.

Ø  Sometimes a country can produce and sell a good cheaper than other countries can produce it. That is called: Comparative advantage.

Ø  If you import (buy) more than you export (sell) that is a trade deficit. L

Ø  If you export (sell) more that you import (buy) that is a trade surplus. J

Choose five personal items. Find out where they were made. List the item and its place of origin.

Tomorrow in class we will compare our products and plot the countries of origin on a world map.

We will use this information to make find out what kinds of goods or products the United States imports. We can then discuss rationalizations for the trade imports of the United States.

  • The movement of ideas from place to place is: cultural diffusion or cultural interaction.

Ø  This can happen due through migration, trade and war.

Ø  Migration can impact a region through:

1. Language

2. Religion or Religious Freedom

3. Customs and Traditions

4. Cultural landscape

Ø  You can see the evidence of cultural interaction by:

1. The spread of U.S. culture to other regions. (Coke, music, clothing)

2. Popularization of other cultures in the U.S. (food, ideas, language, religion)
