Course Description:

Environmental Science principles are currently applied to societal concerns such as communicable diseases, environmental pollution and depletion of natural resources. As such, Environmental Science has become a major area of scientific study which impinges on and influences every facet of daily life.

This introductory course is designed to provide a coherent course of study which addresses the development needs of students pursuing the High School Curriculum. The course is structured in such a way to ensure that students become aware of their moral, social and ethical responsibilities, as well as the benefits intrinsic to the practical application of scientific knowledge and to careers in the scientific field. The appropriate knowledge requirements, and related skills and attitudes are all addressed in preparing the course.

Instructional Philosophy/Delivery Plan:

Students will be given challenging projects and assignments. High quality work is expected. All assignments should be completed on time and at the proficient or exemplary level. If the work is below the proficient level, then the assignment may be revised until it is at the proficient or exemplary level.When revisions have been made to demonstrate mastery of Georgia Performance Standards, students will receive the highest grade, not an average grade. The format of this class will consist of lectures, discussions, whole and small group work, and presentations. Assignments will consist of in-class and out of class assignments, and weekly reading and writing assignments.

Major Course Goals:

  • During the course students will be sufficiently exposed to all basic concepts of Environmental Science so as to allow them to develop a working knowledge of the subject matter.
  • To allow students to learn sound laboratory techniques
  • To use technology such as word processing, presentation software, internet and research skills to complete projects
  • To understand the importance of being scientifically literate

Major Tests and Projects:

  • Quizzes and Daily assignments given weekly; Unit test - given at the end of each unit
  • Research Reports and presentations
  • Nine Weeks Exam or Semester Exam

Assessment Plan:

1stand 2nd Semester:

GPS Standard mastery(labs, quizzes, daily assignments): 50%

Unit Test: 50%

Final Grade:

Accumulation of 1st and 2nd semester grades combined.

CLASS RULES: All students are expected to follow the rules of the classroom. The rules are posted in the classroom as a reminder to the students. Students are expected to:

1.Be on time

  1. Must be in assigned seat when tardy bell sounds
  2. Have all materials out on desk
  3. Work on bell work

2.Be prepared

  1. Bring notebook with paper
  2. Bring writing utensil (pen and/or pencils)

3.Be engaged

  1. Participate in class discussions and activities. Sleeping is not an option.
  2. Ask and answer questions
  3. Study
  4. Get extra help

4.Be respectful

  1. Follow ALL school rules including no eating or drinking during class
  2. Follow directions
  3. Clean up your area before you are dismissed
  4. The teacher dismisses you, not the bell
  5. Keep hands, feet, objects to yourself

5 Be responsible

6 Be a positive participant

CONSEQUENCES:

1st offense = Warning

2nd offense = Teacher Conference

3rdoffense = Parent Conference

4th offense = written referral

***More severe offenses or continuous repetition of anoffense could result in other variations of theseconsequence.***

** You will receive 6 restroom passes for the semester (3 per 9 weeks). If you have used all restroom passes at the time of needing to go, then you will have a written referral

MAKEUP POLICY:

In Environmental Science, students will receive standards based instruction. Students will be given challenging projects and assignments. High quality work is expected. All assignments should be completed on time, and at the proficient or exemplary level.

TARDY POLICY

• Each time you are not in the classroom when the tardy bell sounds, the following will occur:

1st Period: Report to the office

2nd-6th Period: Your name will be emailed to the administrators

Lunch detention and any punishment at the discretion of the administrators will result.

LABORATORY SAFETY

•No laboratory work shall be performed by a student without the direct supervision of the teacher. Under no circumstances is a student allowed to work in the laboratory alone.

•You will be instructed at the beginning of each laboratory period, as to the potential dangers that may be encountered and the proper precautions that are required to eliminate or reduce such hazards.

•Read all directions for the experiment before attempting to work. Ask questions if you don’t understand any part of the directions. No changes from the instruction will be allowed without permission from the teacher.

•Never perform any activity that is not authorized or supervised by the teacher.

•Do not operate equipment without operating instructions or specific permission from teacher (i.e. Bunsen burner or centrifuge).

•No eating, drinking, or application of cosmetics is allowed in the laboratory.

•Always wash hands after handling chemicals, plants, animals or dissection tools.

•Careless behavior in a laboratory can cause accidents. HORSEPLAY, teasing, LOUD TALKING, TOSSING OBJECTS, and moving outside your assigned lab area are not allowed in the laboratory.

•All personal possessions such as books, coats, papers, which are not related to the laboratory procedure, should not be brought into the laboratory work area.

•Each laboratory student will be made aware of the use and location of all safety equipment.

•At the completion of the laboratory period or when an experiment is complete, return all equipment to proper storage and clean the work area.

The best time to reach me during the day is between 2:50-4:00 P.M. or via e-mail at sroom rules will be followed on a daily basis, as well as the consequences, if the student does not adhere to these rules. Any extreme violations of the rules will result in an immediate referral to the office. I reserve the right to collect all materials that are not necessary for this class. I will return the items to the student or the parent at my discretion. I hope that you have found the information, above, necessary to maintain an orderly classroom so that learning can take place.
