Industrial Disasters
The purpose of this project is to identify and research one of the top industrial disasters — that is, an accident of human origin that had a devastating impact on both the environment and on public health. Moreover, you will have to identify the cause of the disaster and discuss whether the disaster could have been prevented by better engineering. Last, you will assess whether any ethical principles of engineering were violated leading up to the disaster.
1)Go to the website
a)Skim the ten disasters on the list and choose a few favorites
b)As a class, review everyone’s choices and decide on different disasters for each class member
2)Once you have chosen a disaster, research and document the following:
a)A basic what-when-where description of the disaster
b)A detailed description of both the human and environmental impacts of the disaster
c)An analysis of the cause of the accident (the WHY), focusing in particular on:
i)Faulty engineering
ii)Unethical decisions
3)Construct and present a powerpoint presentation that includes
a)Title slide
b)Disaster description including a timeline of events (2-4 slides)
c)Engineering analysis (2-3 slides)
d)Ethical analysis (1-2) slides
e)Conclusion & recommendations slide
