Weekly Update

Room 208

FIFTH Grade

10-23-15

Language Arts:

This week we continued our Treasures unit titled, The American West. We started our week identifying similarities and differences in non-fiction text. Students read two non-fiction texts about naturalists. They used a double-bubble map to record their findings.

Later in the week we read finished Old Yeller. It was a very sad Thursday afternoon. Students learned of Old Yeller’s fate on the first page of the text. They were given clues throughout the text as to what happened. What an awesome way to end our week by watching the movie as a whole group!

This week in grammar the students worked with plural nouns. The rules for adding plural noun ending can be tricky. We discussed the rules. These are the same rules we learned last year and they will be the same rules the students will use next year in sixth grade (too).

We are publishing our Personal Narratives that we have been working on. Next week we will write a scary story (for Halloween). The kiddos should have fun with these. The goal is to have them completed by Friday. They will be on display in the hallway…check them out!

Math:

The students continue to work on multi-digit multiplication with decimals. The students have standard algorithm mastered!!

We are currently working with a real life word problem. Ms. Kuzmanwants to make some macramé plant hangers to sell on Etsy. The students need to figure out how much of the special cording she will need and how much money supplies will cost.

Students are working independently or with a small group to complete this.

Thank you so much to our parents who are volunteering for Math Olympiad. Ms. Kuzman and I feel so fortunate to be able to offer this to our students.

Social Studies:

Students will start the Age of Exploration next week. We will start with building background knowledge about Explorers. Then Ms. Yeatts and I will introduce our next project-based assessments to the students.

We will write a research report (in class) and we will also participate in an explorer “talk show” where the kids will take on the role of an explorer. Students will get to dress up as their explorer and participate in a “panel interview.” Think Oprah meets U.S. History. Should be fun and creative!

Science

Students will continue to work with matter with Ms. Kuzman next week. She will start to review what was taught/learned in matter and will assess the student’s on their understanding.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Please bear with me this next week. I still do not have answers regarding some Halloween items (costumes, parade). As I receive information, I will pass it on 
