WHEREAS: This day the City Council commemorates a much-loved and unique son of Cambridge, Lawrence Lloyd Hinkson, better known to many as “Reverend Larry Love;” and

WHEREAS: Lawrence was born in Cambridge to Charles and Jeswene Hinkson on July 5, 1926; and

WHEREAS: Lawrence graduated from Cambridge High and Latin and Berkeley School of Music; and

WHEREAS: As a pianist and songwriter, Lawrence was especially proud of “Star of Love,” a song he wrote that was later recorded by vocalist Roy Hamilton in the 1950’s; and

WHEREAS: Lawrence served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II; and

WHEREAS: In later years, Lawrence was a familiar sight to the residents of Cambridge as he made his way around the city on roller skates wearing one of his many military outfits or as he took one of his many breaks at the 1369 Coffee House, one of his favorite Cambridge destinations; and

WHEREAS: Lawrence was a colorful and inextricable part of the Central Square community; his image is depicted in both outdoor murals of Central Square, one on Massachusetts Avenue, and one on Brookline Street; and


WHEREAS: Lawrence will be missed by his many friends and relatives, his sisters Vivian Breedy, Cynthia Spooner, Leona (Bernice) Weems and Thaishim Hammonds; his children Linda Scales-Ardolino, Terri Nelson, Lawrence Hinkson Jr., Jeswene Smith, Nickohl Moody, Joye Thomas, Aprille Bakit, Michael Hinkson and Angel; his niece Carol Hill; and many other nieces, nephews, grandchildren and other relatives; and

WHEREAS: Central Square cannot be the same without the presence of Reverend Larry Love, but his spirit and his memory will survive here; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the City Council go on record dedicating the corner of Inman Street and Massachusetts Avenue as "Reverend Larry Love Square;" and be it further

RESOLVED: That the City Clerk be and hereby is requested to prepare a suitably engrossed copy of this resolution for presentation to the Hinkson family on behalf of the entire City Council.
