Project title
Acute stroke management within tertiary teaching hospitals – is the variation significant?
Project aim / objective (What are you going to achieve by completing this project? Why is it important? What are the benefits?)
Use data to drive a quality of care project around acute stroke patients within tertiary teaching hospitals– pilot project
Research question to be investigated (i.e. PICO question)
Does variation in acute stroke care provided by allied health professionals against the national stroke guidelines within tertiary teaching hospitals effect patient length of stay?
Does variation in acute stroke care provided by allied health professionals against the national stroke guidelines within tertiary teaching hospitals effect patient outcome?

Project methodology (How are you going to meet your objectives? )
1.  Pilot project to be undertaken initially to test the methodology (sites TBA)
2.  Define patient cohort – All patients who have had a stroke (specify DRG) with an acute episode
3.  Map the patient experience (Number of patients TBA) against the National Stroke Foundation Guidelines (Working party to develop the template)
4.  Identify gaps in service provision and why these gaps exist at each site
5.  Look at measures available during the patient journey that will assist with understanding the experience (e.g. LOS, patient satisfaction and perception of experience, OOS, falls, screening, , mortality, readmission rates, patient outcomes etc)
6.  Identify variations in care and assess whether these variations are appropriate, based on comparison across participating sites and clinical reasoning
7.  Develop recommendations based on the findings
8.  Consider widening the group of participating facilities once pilot project completed
Project key deliverables (Key activities, outcomes, outputs and approximate timeframes)
1.  Patient experience mapped against the NSF guidelines in pilot sites (Allied health services)
2.  Identification of gaps in service provision at pilot sites
3.  Identify variations in care through triangulation of data to assess whether variation of care is appropriate
4.  Recommendations to improve the quality of care of stroke patients at participating sites developed based on the findings
5.  Recommendation for possible extension of the project to include more sites and expand the continuum of care
6.  Identify exemplars
Project evaluation process (What are you going to measure at baseline, ongoing and post-completion evaluation? Include evaluation method and timeframes)
Baseline evaluation / Timeframe
National Stroke Foundation Audit results – 2015
Establish services on site
Establish input & processes
Establish current discharge destinations from acute stroke service (or equivalent)
Establish current data being collected about cohort
Establish typical acute stroke patient journey
Ongoing evaluation / Timeframe
Post-completion evaluation / Timeframe
Research and ethics application statement (Has an ethics application been submitted? What level of application has been submitted? Are you intending to submit an ethics application?)
Multi-site low level ethics application to be submitted
Intellection property statement (Who will own the intellectual property for this project?)
All outcomes from this project will remain the property of the Australasian Allied Health Benchmarking Consortium (AAHBC). However, participating sites will be able to freely use the information relevant to their site which is collected as part of this project, with recognition of AAHBC.
Resource requested (What funding or other resourcing are you requesting?)
Possible request for funding – TBA (e.g. Statistics support, data analysis, project officer)
