Lufthansa Flight Trainingtrains with eyevis’ DLPprojectors

More than 20 flight simulators are equipped with low-maintenance projectors with phenomenal closeness to reality

July 2016, Reutlingen: Thedeployment in professional flight simulators is one of the most challenging applications of projector technology.High mechanicalloads, a precise and stable calibration as well as the highest requirements in terms of image quality and speed are all characteristics of this field of application. After a six-month testing phase on a Boeing747 simulator, the DLP® projectors by eyeviswere convincing in all these areas that Lufthansa Flight Training GmbH (LFT) selected them for the refitting of their projector systems. Ten of the existing simulators have already been refitted, the others will follow suit over the course of this year. Additionally to the already existing systems, LFT also equips their new flight simulators with projection systems by eyevis. The latest example for this is a simulator for a Boeing 777, which was constructed for LFT by Lockheed Martin Commercial Flight Training (LMCFT)

DLP technology in robust casing

Lufthansa Flight Training GmbH, based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, is one of Europe’s leading providers of pilot and flight attendant training. In their headquarters alone, LFT now operates 21 flight simulators for different types of aircrafts. 20 of the existing systems will be refitted with eyevis projectors. “The LCoS projectors with which they were fitted before were high-maintenance and expensive to upkeep,” explains Christoph Pfäffle who is responsible for these projects as Sales Manager VR & Simulation at eyevis. “Our DLP projectors, in contrast, are nearly maintenance-free. This is a result of their robust metal structure, due to which the parts can even withhold shaking motions without shifting against each other. The image geometry is preserved for the long term without any readjustments.”

Fast and realistic during day and night simulations

All parts of the newlyinstalled eyevis ESP-LHD-1000-LED DLP projectors are extraordinarily durable. And this type of projection is fast: Thanks to eyevis’ DLP projectors, the lagging of the picture during panning and movements is now a thing of the past. Moreover, they provide a minimal black level at just 0.003 fL for night simulations as well as highest brightness at 10 fL for day light simulations. These values even exceed the requirements of the German Federal Aviation Office for level D simulations!

LFT equipped every simulator with three projectors, which allow for a realistic view out of the Cockpit at angles of 150°x40°. Thanks to the mechanical hard-edge-blending masks and the automatic auto-colour-tracking system, the projection transitions between the three projectors remain invisible and even after years of operation, no colour differences whatsoever can be detected between the channels. In combination with the high resolution of 1920x1080 pixels each, the projectors in the simulator display a realistic image, which contributes considerably to training success.

Christoph Pfäffleadds: “Our DLP projectors are among the best to be applied for simulations. The commission by Lufthansa Flight Training signifies to us an appreciation of this quality. We are very happy about this achievement!”
