Respiratory Medicine: Dr Stephen Fowler
Critical care: Dr Shondipon Laha
Medical Education: Dr Colin Lumsden
Outline of duties
These academic foundation posts are supervised by three academic consultants with active research links to the nearby Universities of Central Lancashire, Lancaster and Manchester. The academic postsare linked to two posts in Medicine and one in Critical Care. There are several on-going research programmes available to the successful candidates. The three mentors will supervise the junior doctors during the four-month dedicated research period. It is hoped to have projects that will run for over a year so that meaningful data can be obtained and papers published.
The Medical Education placement will have the scope to incorporate 1 or 2 sessions within the Anaesthetic department.
The academic foundation candidates will receive a good grounding in research methodologies and we aim for them to have submitted papers in peer reviewed journals and / or for presentation at national / international meetings by the end of the F2 track.
The four-month period dedicated to the academic element of the track will enable the Foundation doctor to dedicate themselves to their research project. Although working independently the F2 will be closely supervised and well supported by their Educational Supervisor and will continue to attend the monthly F2 organised teaching programme

Outline of duties
The trainee undertaking the academic foundation post in ICM will provide clinical duties on the Critical Care Unit at RPH. This is a large busy Critical Care Unit with a mixed ICU and HDU. The unit caters for several specialities as the trust is now a designated Major Trauma Centre and a tertiary referral service for neurosurgery, upper gastrointestinal, head and neck and vascular surgery.
We have an enthusiastic department including the hospital Dean and an Associate Dean for ManchesterUniversityMedicalSchool and the Foundation Programme Director.
The trainee will form part of a junior rota with 24 hour senior support within the unit. They will gain knowledge in the resuscitation of unwell patients and in the usage and placement of invasive monitoring. They will also learn the basics of mechanical ventilation and renal replacement therapies.
The trainees will be expected to attend a protected half day of teaching each week. We run frequent audits and doctors will expect to conduct one during their attachment. We are proud of our delivery of medical education and trainees will be asked to assist in the teaching of medical and nursing staff. The department recently published a “Beginner’s guide to Intensive Care Medicine” which was highly commended by the BMA. Trainees from the department in the future will aid in new editions of the book.
The research department consists of a clinical lead, three research nurses and a research fellow. The lead clinician also co-leads the Comprehensive Local Research Network for Cumbria and Lancashire. They contribute to several national research trials and runs smaller local projects including medical student project options.
The successful candidate will be provided with protected time throughout their F2 year in order to develop and conduct a research project of their own with close supervision by their educational supervisor and to help with national trials. Their work will be presented at regional, national and international meetings and they will be expected to publish the work in a peer-reviewed journal. The job is EWTD compliant.

Placement:
General Practice / Clinical supervisor:
GP Trainer
This is a formal attachment to one of our local training practices. The post covers all aspects of Primary Care work. There is regular exposure to patients with face to face consultations on clinical matters. In addition, the F2 gains competencies such as organisational skills, and multi-disciplinary team working in primary care.
The F2 attends and contributes to Practice meetings and gains an overview of the management organisation in General Practice.
This post includes work with Primary Care Trusts as well as liaising with Hospital Trusts when required.
There is currently no provision of Out of Hours and this is not a requirement for these posts.
All of our GP posts are within Training Practices so there is AV equipment available to use to support training in Consultation skills. Many of the Practices already have experience of training GP Registrars.
The F2 doctors receive guidance and training form the Practice management team along with other clinicians such as Nurse Practitioners. There is also the opportunity to gain exposure to GPs working with speciality interests by working with other Partners within the Practices.
We encourage regular feedback from the practices on the progress of the F2 doctors and support is still available centrally from the Postgraduate Team.
Study leave is supported where appropriate.
The protected teaching programme occurs for one whole day once a month where F2s in GP will return to the Trust to be tutored with the rest of their F2 colleagues.
