Pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten Activities and Resources

  1. I Like Me! by Nancy Carlson, “I Like Me” from Dr. Thomas Moore’s CD entitled I Am Special (This is a very easy song that the students love.)
  1. It’s Better Together by Developmental Learning Materials, “The More We Get Together” author unknown ---- We talk about all the different things that we can do together. (the see-saw, games such as hide and seek, tag, catch, reading books) We then do an activity I call “wash the dog”. I have a volunteer come up to wash the dog. I have a bucket, a sponge, a brush, a towel, and some soap. I hand these to the student. I have a dog puppet on my hand. I ask the student to wash the dog. The student can’t wash the dog because their hands are too full. They realize they need help and someone comes up to help them. They work together to wash the dog.
  1. Something Specialby David McPhail (This story is about the things that you can do that make you special.) I have a large ribbon cut out that says “I AM Special” that students color and wear. We sing “I Am Special” from Dr. Thomas Moore’s CD entiled I Am Special.
  1. Winners Never Quit! by Mia Hamm (This story is about never giving up when you are learning something new or things get tough.)
  1. “The Itsy Bitsy Spider” (There are many book versions of the classic.) I use this song to teach a lesson about perseverance. The prekindergarten students love learning such a “big” word. I have a long paper roll covered in foil with a spider attached by a string. I pull the spider up the spout and let him fall down as we sing the song. The spider doesn’t give up and goes up the spout again. The craft part of the activity can be found:
  1. The Little Red Hen----We read this story and talk about cooperation and working together. I usually use puppets to help tell the story.
  1. We’re Different, We’re the Same by Bobbi Jane Kates----This is a good story to use when talking about diversity.
  1. Today I Feel Silly & Other Moods That Make My Day by Jamie Lee Curtis----We match up feeling words with faces and sing “If You Are Happy & You Know It”. Emotions are feelings we experience each day. Because emotions change, we may feel many emotions each day.
  1. What a Teddy Bear Needs by Marilyn Kaye
  1. The Berenstain Bears and The Truth by Stan and Jan Berenstain---We talk about honesty and what that means. We talk about why it is important to tell the truth. We also talk about other familiar stories such as Pinocchio and The Little Boy Who Cried Wolf.
  1. Another Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown----We sing “If You’re Happy and You Know It” changing the words to learning and growing.
