Kaleidoscope Workshop Descriptions

Basketball (1st-5th) (Thursday)

Abigail Monahan will lead the kids in fun games that stress the fundamentals of dribbling, passing, shooting, and defence. Teams will be formed, andscrimmages will take place each week.

Dates: January 21, 28, February 4, 11, 18, and March 3, 10, 17, 24

Registration Fee: $45 for nine workshops

Comic Club (3-5th) (Thursday)

Lower School Art Teacher, Tom Bonello will cover an introduction to drawing the figure, the anatomy & vocabulary of a comic strip, and the basics of page layout. Students will work together to create characters and short stories to share with classmates.

Dodge Ball (1st-5th) (Wednesday)

Abigail Monahan will lead the kids in multiple rounds of games that stress the fundamentals of this fun sport. Teams will be formed, and scrimmages will take place each week.

Jump Rope Games (K-5th) (Monday)

Come have fun playing jump rope, knock out, double Dutch and much more!

Karate (PCAP and K-5th) (Monday)

This course is designed to introduce students to basic karate in a comfortable and affordable environment. Once students reach a certain level, they are encouraged to investigate advancing their training by enrolling in a martial arts school. Continuing intermediate students are welcomed.

On-Site Tutoring (Scheduled as Needed)

Does your child struggle with math, science, or foreign language? Is he or she falling behind in reading? On-site tutoring can help! We provide on-site tutoring for any academic subject. These services can be done with a PCA teacher or Dynamic Learning Solutions. In most cases, a formal evaluation is not required for tutoring with a PCA teacher or through Dynamic Learning Solutions. Origami (2nd-5th) (Tuesday)

Our instructor, Ichiko Harju, would like to share a part of her Japanese heritage with the paper-folding art
called Origami. Through this workshop each student's fine motor skills will be enhanced and geometric concepts will be reinforced.

Group Music Lessons

PCAP Piano Academy (ages 3-5) (Tuesday*/Wednesday/Thursday)

*Possibly Tuesday based on enrolment

This is an ideal program for exploring interest in piano lessons, reinforcing directional reading, strengthening independence of fine motor skills and coordination as well as learning to appreciate and enjoy music. Preschoolers will attend their group lesson during recess and rest time for a 30 minute session. Three to four children will be in a session. Students will work on beginning musical concepts, rhythm and exploring the piano. Practice at home is encouraged but not necessary. Students will be organized and assigned an exact time that is coordinated by age and an assessment of skills. Space is limited and times assigned may vary based on the day a child attends classes.

Day & Time: Wednesday/Thursday (possibly Tuesday but that option will not be listed on Veracross); 30 minute session; by registering for a specific day you are requesting that particular day-class times might need to be arranged based on enrollment

Junior High Jazz Band (6th-8th) (Tuesday)
Join your friends for an exciting music-making experience! Explore the style of jazz, rock and other popular music. Open to all band instruments and select others instruments (see Mrs. Veno with questions). Auditions required only for guitarists, pianists and percussionists.

Beginner Group Recorder Lessons (1st-3rd) (Wednesday) Does your child have an interest in playing a woodwind instrument? The recorder is a wonderful way to learn many techniques needed to play some of the band instruments when they get to 4th grade. The recorder is just the right size for most younger students and much of what they learn can easily transfer to a flute, clarinet or saxophone when the time comes. A recorder and method book will be provided for an additional fee of $10 which should be paid directly to the instructor at the first class.

Old Time Fiddle Jam (3rd-5th) (Friday)

Yee-haw! Come join the fun, y'all! We're going to be dusting off our fiddles and getting right down to business with great old tunes that will even get your grandpa dancing! Led by PCA's strings director, Susie Stevens, this fiddle jam is for any strings student in grades 3-5 who has at least 1 year experience on their instrument. Required book: Basic Fiddlers Philharmonic Old-Time Fiddle Tunes - Alfred Publishers. There will be some for sale for $6.95, or you can order one yourself for your instrument.

Mommy and Me Music (3 months-3 years old) (Monday)

Young children love to sit on their parent's knee and be sung to. Do you remember "Patty Cake"? Lap games, rhymes and songs for little ones are not just a delightful way to bond together and create happy memories, but they also prepare young children incredibly well for a lifetime of music making. Led by one of PCA's music teachers, Susie Stevens, this refreshing and fun class is a great way to start your week and get some very special time with your child.

Notes: *Minimum of 4 pairs; one child per adult

Private Music Lessons

Participate in private lessons and enjoy developing a love for music. Any additional cost of music books should be paid directly to the instructor. Existing students will be paired up with their existing teacher.
Day & Time: Arranged between parent and instructor.

Registration Fee: Monday-Friday: $216 for 8 lessons @ $27 for 30 minutes

$320 for 8 lessons @ $40 for 45 minutes

Notes: * Lessons run for 8 weeks; the last week of the quarter is reserved for make-ups.

*Makeup Policy: Please notify instructors of any absence 24 hours in advance or as soon as possible if ill. Students are allowed one absence per quarter which may be made-up or refunded. Missed lessons without prior notification will be forfeited (and not refunded). Cancellations made by the instructor or by the school (due to weather) will be made up or refunded.

The last week of each quarter is a makeup week. If your child does not miss any lessons and you want an extra lesson during make-up week, please make arrangements with Michaeleen Sicard, the Kaleidoscope director, to pay for the extra lesson:
