CCGPS: Coordinate Algebra SyllabusMrs.Kate Mackie

2013-2014

Course Description:The fundamental purpose of Coordinate Algebra is to formalize and extend the mathematics that students learned in the middle grades. The critical areas, organized into units, deepen and extend understanding of linear relationships, in part by contrasting them with exponential phenomena, and in part by applying linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend. Coordinate Algebra uses algebra to deepen and extend understanding of geometric knowledge from prior grades. The final unit in the course ties together the algebraic and geometric ideas studied.

Materials Needed: Spiral notebook for interactive notebook (look for 8 ½ by 11 in – Mead 5-Star makes a good quality, durable one), loose-leaf paper, pencils, several LARGE glue sticks, and a calculator. The Texas Instruments TI-36X PRO is the recommended calculator for this course. NOTE: Calculators on MP3 players and cell phones CANNOT be used during class.

Textbook: There is no physical textbook for the course. Students will have access to the online textbook and access information will be sent home when available.

Grading (Standards Based): Scale is based on the state of Georgia standards. At the end of the course, there will be a state mandated End of Course Test (EOCT).

Coordinate Algebra Support- You will receive two different grades — one for the Coordinate Algebra course and one for the Support class. There will be no nine week assessments, EOCT, nor tests in the support class grade. The grading will be broken down into three different sections: Algebra (50%), Geometry (30%) and Data Analysis (20%).

Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty is a serious offense that will not be tolerated. If a student is found cheating on any written work, a grade of zero will be given on the work, a referral will be submitted, and parents will be contacted.

Teacher Blog: The teacher’s blog is an online web page resource that will contain information, news, assignments, and other pertinent information related to the class. You can access this blog through the address provided on the next page under Communication OR through the school’s website:

Make Up Work: Missing grades are marked as a Zero until students complete the missing assignment. Students will receive one more day than the total amount of days absent to make up any missed work, provided that the absence is excused. It is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements to make up any assessments. Daily assignments will be available on the blog.

Extra Credit: Individual extra credit assignments are not given. Bonus points, if offered, will be available throughout the semester to all students on an equal basis and will be related to the academic content of the course.

Retesting: Students will have the opportunity to retest on any summative exam, with the exception of the Common Assessments. Students will be given an opportunity to retest for mastery on each standard. Retest opportunities will only be given after a student completes remediation on a standard. Some examples could include completing extra assigned problems, completing lessons on Study Island or USA Test Prep websites, or attending a remediation tutoring session with the teacher.

Retention: Math is a critical subject and according to the state of Georgia’s graduation policy, a student may not be promoted to the next grade level without passing math.

Tutoring: Tutoring is available Tuesdays & Thursdays after school from 3:40 to 4:15pm, and Wednesdays before school from 7:45 to 7:55am, or by appointment if necessary. Please feel free to contact me about supporting our student through tutoring.

Communication: E-mail is the easiest way to communicate with me. I will try to return emails within 1 business day. My e-mail address is and my blogis
