Social StudiesTextbook: World History, Ancient Civilizations, grade 6

This course offersstudents the opportunity to explore ancient civilizations: Early Humans, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Rome, Greece, Israel, China. Themes will include: geography (location and physical features of the land), culture (a society’s way of life), economics (trade and surplus), government (political bodies and laws), Belief Systems (religious practices and beliefs), science and technology (the development of ideas and inventions).

Classwork:

Content knowledge will be acquired through reading and its components: collecting data, discussions, questioning, citing/evidence; social media research, writing, synthesizing (recreating), and an array assessments.

Open discussions and collaboration will aid the students’ understanding of how and why ancient civilizations parallel current civilizations.

Projects:

Projects are a part of the course requirement. It is a way of measuring the student’s comprehension and understanding of the content taught. Projects may be independent or group assigned, constructed at home during the week and/or weekend. When it comes to items and materials needed, try to be resourceful, and improvise to be cost effective. A project syllabus will be provided when needed.

Public Address:

Always be prepared with a written report or commentary to present to the class for full credit, not partial credit.

Homework and Minder Binder (Agenda)

Homework is assigned Monday – Thursday, asneeded, and for reinforcement, remedial work, make-up work, projects, and/or test preparation. The day’s homework assignment should not take more than 35 minutes to complete. Projects are on-going and require more time. Assignments are recorded by students in their agenda. Please monitor. There is a replacement cost if their agenda is lost/destroyed in some way.

Textbook Care:

Students are assigned a textbook that is bar coded and checked out to them. Each student is responsible for the care of their social studies book for the entire current school year at Rivera Middle School.Keep the text in a safe place. There is a replacement fee if the book is damaged/defaced or lost.

The class Social Studies textbooks are always stored at their desk under their seat when not in use. For make-up work or projects the student will use the social studies book that they have at home, the one issued to them.

Grading: Academic and Citizenship

Assignments (Class and Home) are graded by percent, accuracy, and presentation.

A: 100 – 90% B: 89 – 80% C: 79 – 70% D: 69 – 51% F: 50 – 0%

Citizenship is determined by those that follow the rules of the school and classroom.
