Ancient Egypt and the Oases of the Western Desert, course 078507 (Winter School)

A world authority on Ancient Egypt, Colin will be leading a 24 day tour in late November 2007. The tour includes a camel ride to the monastery of St Simeon, tours of the Nile and Lake Nasser, visits to Cairo, Alexandria, Siwa Oasis, Bahariya Oasis, Dakhleh Oasis, Kharga Oasis, Luxor, Abu Simbel and much much more. Journey to the Afterlife: Mummies, Myth and Magic in Ancient Egypt, course 075068 (Spring School)

How and why did the Egyptians mummify their dead? What magical objects were created to protect them? Explore the religion, art and science behind mummification, handle authentic artefacts, see rare footage of mummy research and spectacular original photos of the world’s greatest museum collections of Egyptology.

The Tomb Room
A dedicated themed space for families and children to explore ancient Egypt, incorporating a cosy discovery area; an interactive play area with puzzles and games; an activity area for practical art making and a viewing area for families to engage with the sights and sounds of ancient Egypt.
Saturday 21 July – Sunday 28 October, daily 10am-5pm. Free entry. No bookings required but subject to space limitations. Parents/carers must supervise their children at all times.
Tomb Room Treasures: Children’s Ancient Egypt Adventures and Activities
A series of Egypt-themed weekend workshops for children including making mummies; build-your-own pyramid; writing hieroglyphs; stories of ancient Egypt; magic, spells, amulets and masks of the gods.

Author presentation: Unearthing Cleopatra
Colin Falconer, novelist
Popular author and Perth resident, Colin Falconer, shares his personal journey of investigation and discovery as he sought to separate historical fact from mythical fantasy in the research for his book, When We Were Gods: A Novel of Cleopatra. He discusses the truths revealed by his research, how he turned this knowledge into an historical novel, and the enduring popular fascination with ancient Egypt and its infamous last ruler, Cleopatra VII. Every member of the audience enters the free draw to win a copy of the novel, signed by the author.
