Members appointed to NHS Dumfries and Galloway

The Cabinet Secretary for Health, Wellbeing and Sport today announced the appointment of two Members to NHS Dumfries and Galloway.

The Health Board’s role is to improve the health and wellbeing of the people of Dumfries and Galloway. In doing so, NHS Dumfries and Galloway provides a vast range of health services to approximately 147,000 people.

Lesley Bryce– is a part time business degree student at the University of West Scotland. Lesley has previously worked as a registered nurse in London and in Dumfries. She also brings to the board experience from raising two children, one of whom has a lifelong developmental disability. Being a parent carer, has been both very rewarding and challenging and entirely shaped her plans. After some years volunteering for various charity organisations in Dumfries, she became a trustee for the local Dumfries and Galloway carers’ centre, an organisation that provides support to carers and aims to raise awareness of their needs. As a result of her experiences and knowledge she believes she has an understanding of the needs of the people of Dumfries and the obstacles that many in disadvantaged communities can face and is committed to working with the board in addressing these challenges.

Grace Cardozo - is an experienced and well respected practitioner working around equality and diversity, in particular with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people, adults and older people, both in urban and rural areas. As well as supporting LGBT young people and adults over her career in LGBT Youth Scotland which spans almost 20 years, the wider programme of work that Grace has developed, using the LGBT Charter Mark as a mainstreaming tool across the NHS and other organisations, has helped embed LGBT equality across several local organisations. In 2013, Grace won a National Diversity Award for her work in championing the rights of LGBT peopIe. Grace also brings experience in community engagement and development; staff and project management; policy and interagency work. Grace has recently set up a small business, and commenced work as a self-employed consultant in youth work, community development and equality and diversity.

These appointments will be for four years and will run from April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2019.

These appointments are part time and attracts a remuneration of £8,088 for a time commitment of eight hours per week.

Lesley Bryce and Grace Cardozo do not hold any other ministerial appointments.

This appointment is regulated by the Commissioner for Ethical Standards in Public Life in Scotland.

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity within the last five years (if there is any to be declared) to be made public. Lesley Bryce and Grace Cardozo have had no political activity in the last five years.
