Workshop Summary:

More than 110 years ago Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, recognized through his fictional character

Sherlock Holmes, the important role that footwear and tire track evidence plays in a criminal

investigation. Today, however, the value of this evidence is frequently overlooked by

investigators and crime scene technicians.

This three day workshop is an intensive hands-on program that will teach the student proper

preservation, documentation and collection techniques. Students complete an array of practical

documentation and recovery exercises that include photography, casting and the use of electrostatic

lifting devices. The student will also learn methods for applying footwear and tire track

evidence to an investigation.

Required Equipment:

Attendees will need to bring a camera (film or digital), tripod and off-camera flash. Due to the hands on nature of this training, class size is limited to 12 officers and they must be a member of MTU #13.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

The instructor for the class will be Mr. Michael Wasowicz. Mr. Wasowicz is a thirty one year law enforcement veteran with twenty six years of crime scene processing and forensic services management experience. Mr. Wasowicz presents with the approach of someone who has wide ranging crime scene experience - from arson fires to death investigations. He understands that the working crime scene technician is expected to handle the routine to the unexpected on a daily basis. His experience includes fourteen years of supervising a thirteen person forensic team for the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force (NORTAF) and providing training to forensic personnel from many police agencies.

Mr. Wasowicz is certified by the International Association for Identification as a Senior Crime Scene Analyst and Bloodstain Pattern Examiner.

Mr. Wasowicz is a member of the: International Association for Identification (International, Illinois and Wisconsin Division), International Association of Arson Investigators (International and Illinois Division) and International Association of Special Investigation Units (Illinois Division).

Awards:

First recipient of the 'Good of the Association' Award from the Illinois Division of the I.A.I., recipient of the Forensic Service Award for the year 2002 from Cook County Illinois Crime Stoppers, and recipient of the 2003 Excellence in Law Enforcement Award from the Illinois Special Agents Association.
