Overview: In this activity, you are going to find the release point that indicates when you need to drop the bomb so that it hit the tank. Your grade will depend upon your accuracy.

Objectives:

1)Use a measuring tape and stop watch to find the tanks speed.

2)Use kinematic equations to find the distance the tank will travel as the bombs drops through the air.

Pre-lab Questions:

1)What information must we find to get the release point?

2)Describe how to set up a speed trap.

3)How can we find the time for the tank it takes for the tank to go from the release point to where the bomb hit the tank?

4)Describe how to find the bomb release point using the time from #3

5)Practice Calculation: Below is a diagram of a tank passing through a speed trap which shows all of the information needed to find the tanks speed. With this information and the time it takes for the bomb to hit the ground, find the release point distance “X” which indicates when the bomb must be dropped.

Part 1: Setting up the speed trap

Set up a speed trap so that your group can calculate the tanks speed. Use the average of three times

Part 3: Finding the release point

Find the release location “ΔX” that indicates when you need to release the bomb to hit the tank. You now know the tanks speed as found in part 1 and you know how long the tank will travel after passing the release point as found in part 2.
