I.  Brief History of the Organization

The history of Shishu Mandir dates back to October 1973, when the medical doctor couple Dwarka Das and Hella Mundhra emigrated from Germany to set up a small hospital in Bangalore. They took up the humanitarian work of extending their medical services to people in slums and particularly to children who often suffered from chronic ailments brought about by unhygienic conditions, malnutrition and infections.

The Mundhras began to admit children to their hospital with the idea of providing long-term treatment and personal care along with the basic necessities for a healthy life to experience a true sense of belonging. Working towards this vision, in 1983 the Shishu Mandir Society was formed, and by 1988, minimum 16 children were staying at the Shishu Mandir Home permanently. In June 1994 a school experiment was started in the premises of the Shishu Mandir Home and on December 16th 2000 a separate school building under the name Shishu Mandir Education Centre (SMEC) was opened in the outskirts of Bangalore to look after the educational needs of poor children.

Currently the organisation comprises of a Home in two buildings, a school for poor children (exclusively) and a vocational training centre for school drop-outs with a total of 65 staff members.

II. Aims and Objectives of the Organization

·  To establish Homes for underprivileged children irrespective of community, language and religious affiliation from anywhere in India.

·  To establish educational institutions including pre-school centres for the care of infants, for the advancement of academic and professional training of underprivileged children to equip them for an independent contribution to the society at large.

·  To promote vocational training in whatever callings that the children of the home and school and surrounding communities would require to equip them for work opportunities outside.

·  To promote ‘Education and social Services’ in terms of hygiene, nutrition, of family planning and similar services.

·  To provide medical services of any kind towards all dependants of Shishu Mandir as well as towards underprivileged people at large.

·  To run and manage all of the projects of the Society through internal means or by agencies of its choice.

III. Present Activities of Shishu Mandir

Shishu Mandir is a Centre for the REHABILITATION of children through the following measures:

1. Shishu Mandir School

At the Education Centre, Shishu Mandir provides free English medium education for the children of poor and underprivileged families.

·  The system of education is child-oriented by a specially formed child friendly syllabus for the children of level LKG to Std. 10.

·  We take only 10 children in a class

·  70% seats are reserved for girls in all the classes

·  Provide full support for their higher education/vocational training after completing 10th std

·  Provide breakfast and lunch

·  We take care of all medical expenses

·  All educational materials are provided to the students

·  Provide the opportunity to learn skills like swimming and cycling

2. Home for Children

The institution provides a home care to children from disturbed families. With a maximum space for 30 children there are at present 30 children who are being cared for at the Shishu Mandir Home.

Adoption is carried out in the best interests of children who are orphaned, abandoned and neglected. The Shishu Mandir Home is a licensed adoption agency recognized by the Central Government of India for in-country and inter-country adoption.

3. Shishu Mandir Vocational Training Centre

School drop out youth above the age of 16 are given vocational training through Shishu Mandir Community College. The courses offered are Automobile, Fitter, Electrical, Computer & Tailoring. Computer & Tailoring are one year courses where as the other three courses are offered for 6 months. No fees are collected. The students are given lunch, uniform, writing materials, internship training, medical insurance etc. free of cost. They are all helped to find suitable jobs after the training.

4. Higher Education

All the students completing 10th std are given the opportunity to go for higher studies.

Presently 30 students are studying in different colleges. Among them 13 are doing graduation. One student who is a total orphan is supported for the hostel expenses as well as for the college education. We are hoping that some of them will go even for post graduation.

5. Child Care Centre

We run a child care centre inside the most neglected village for 70 children who are in the age group of 2.5 years to 4 years.

After that most of them join Shishu Mandir School. They are given milk in the morning, lunch and snacks in the evening.

6. Housing Projects for People living under inhuman Conditions

Shishu Mandir has taken up the project of providing homes for children of the Education Centre who live in shed-like huts and tents. The aim is to provide small houses for many families, since most of the people are living in inhuman conditions, as they were all bonded labourers till 1976. At present the housing programme is taken up for the most deserving families.

7. Awareness Programmes for Women and Youths

Through village level animation Shishu Mandir is organizing awareness programmes on different topics like health and hygiene, human rights etc. to empower the people to take their development and progress into their own hands. We run 10 self help groups for 200 women.
