Develop an action plan to help your service to both embrace the cultural diversity of children, families and the community and address the related standards and elements in the National Quality Standard.

If possible, work with your colleague/s to identify different strategies, develop the plan, and share responsibilities for implementing it.

Tips

Consider identifying goals that target different partners (e.g. children, families and educators) over different timeframes. This will help you to more effectively build your overall capacity for working with diverse children, families and communities. These may include focuses targeting:

  • parents, e.g.by developing a range of ways that parents can engage in the program (timeframe: 6 months, starting in February)
  • community members, e.g. promoting connections between the service and the local Aboriginal community or Torres Strait Islander community (timeframe: 3 months, starting in April).
  • children, e.g. developing children’s awareness and pride in their own cultural background and heritage (timeframe: 12 months, starting in March and continuing into the following year)
  • educators, e.g. developing professional understandings so all staff can support children to understand and respect diversity (timeframe: 12 months, starting in February and continuing into the following year).

Remember, building inclusive ways of working is an ongoing journey that requires continual professional commitment and reflection. Focusing on a small number of achievable goals at a time will support success and build motivation to continue the journey.

Steps for completing the action plan
  1. Identify some clear focuses or goals and timeframes for achieving them, e.g. a start and end date for meeting each goal. Print additional action plans, if needed.
  2. Identify specific strategies and steps that will help you achieve the goal and who is responsible, e.g. a team leader and/or committee.
  3. Identify any barriers or issues that may need to be addressed so your plan can be achieved. Identify ways to address the barrier/issue.
  4. Track your progress and, if necessary, revise your plan as the year progresses.
  5. Celebrate your progress and reflect on successes and professional learnings as you work through plan.
