Goals for Computer Graphics 1 students:

This semester course is intended for all students interested in doing artwork on computers. Computer literacy is helpful but not required. An introduction to Photoshop will occupy the first several weeks before real-world application is applied. Student may also use word processing, presentation, and desktop publishing programs to combine their graphic images with text for logging notes or preliminary sketches. Creating and importing images with the electronic scanner and the video or electronic camera will be introduced. File management systems will be explored. File management: Student Shared Drive S:

Materials and Methods:

Computer hardware care and use – computer, scanner, camera, printer, Wacom Intuos 4 tablet and pen.

Flash (usb) drive not required but useful for backing up or transporting files. Usually 8G will do.

Software - Adobe Photoshop CS6

Assignments will be given in ‘drawing’ & selecting, composition, design, color, manipulation (text/images) & multiple layers including masks and working with channels. The final output will be assessed according to design, problem solving, color management, size and following of instruction.

Goals for Computer Graphics 2-4 students:

These semester courses are intended to provide opportunities for advanced work in computer graphics for those students who have demonstrated strong ability in the use of graphic programs and are capable of self-directed work in a laboratory setting. Advanced alternate paint systems and electronic image input will be emphasized as students continue to expand their abilities in the computer graphic field. Projects may include animation and 3D manipulation. There may be time for independent study in areas of your choice – you’ve earned it! File management: Student Shared Drive S:

Assessments:

Group critiques are used to help you see how other students solve problems. They are opportunities not only to learn from others, but also to improve

·  your own eye (seeing successful and less successful artistic choices),

·  your own ear (hearing how to help not hurt other artists improve),

·  your own mind (analyzing art for the elements and principles of Design), and

·  your own voice (expressing your thoughts, feelings, and interpretations of art).

Individual critiques on paper are used for students to self-assess. You will fill out a rubric for certain lessons to evaluate how well you have fulfilled the goals of that assignment. You may also write in comments. I will respond with my assessment based on the same rubric criteria/goals.

Grades will be based on the aesthetic appeal of the final product, the stated objectives to follow and how well the design is communicated; also on your process of problem solving, overall craftsmanship (print or photo clean? Matted/ mounted?), attention to detail, meeting specific learning goals, and—especially—your use of class time to practice, focus and improve your skills.

Every student starts with 15 Participation Points at the beginning of each quarter. Participation points are easy to lose - and hard to get back! If you lose participation points you may earn them back by coming in before or after school (when I am available) to help with supplies and organization, or to work on your own art pieces. You may also earn them back during time in class as needed and available with prior consent.

In addition to graded pieces, participation will count toward 15% of your grade each quarter. Participation is observable. It includes being on time, having your computer on and working with the appropriate software - as well as taking the work seriously and respecting the equipment, working IN CLASS - I do not accept work that is solely done outside of the classroom, performing your daily duties, being attentive, and sharing thoughts and ideas in critiques. Participation means being involved and working to your potential in class.

Supplies:

You should bring a pencil/eraser to every class. You will receive MANY soft copy handouts regarding the unlimited functions within this software. You will need to have a folder or 3-ring binder for these if you wish to print them and have a hard copy. They are the best way to problem solve if I am unavailable. You will be assigned a Wacom Tablet & Pen that YOU are responsible for during your time of use. You are also responsible for the care and safe keeping of this hardware.

Rules:

IPod’s & headphones are a privilege when working intently and quietly – using only one earpiece so that you may still hear instruction. *They are not a problem until they become a problem and you lose your privilege.

** I do expect files to be named appropriately as instructed AND spelled correctly, in appropriate file hierarchy and file folder as instructed. Example: You have been given instruction to name your file Goal1_Your last name_your first name. You instead name it G1, Goally, etc. These are NOT acceptable file names and will not be graded, resulting in a zero. DO NOT make me look for your work. It is YOUR responsibility to turn in your files in the appropriate folder. If it doesn’t come up in my search because of an error on your part naming it, then it will not be graded and a zero will result in Pinnacle. ** Your responsibility to check Pinnacle!

Tardiness = Lack of instruction, which in turn comprises your grade. Be punctual and prepared. Cases beyond our control will be overlooked.

Code of Conduct - You will sign your name to this on the survey handout.

Come prepared to have a successful day – Be on time! Instruction starts immediately.
