LKS2 Topic: The Romans in Britain Block F: Boudicca’s Rebellion

This block is ideally taught after the Blocks on Life in Britain before the Romans and The Roman Invasion of Britain

Study Boudicca’s rebellion. Consider life as a Celt under Roman rule and learn what went wrong to cause the rebellion led by Boudicca. Sequence the events leading to the Battle of Colchester and use music and dance/drama to act this out. Finally, paint a portrait of Boudicca.

By the end of this block children will achieve the following outcomes: / ·  Develop a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of British, local and world history, establishing clear narratives within and across the periods they study.

·  Develop techniques, including the control and the use of materials and understand the historical and cultural development of their art form.
Session 1: History
The Queen of the Iceni
Chn think about what life was like in a Celtic tribe when the Romans were in Britain. They play a game to reinforce their knowledge. / ·  Understand what life was like for Celtic people in the days of Roman Rule.
·  Know some of the benefits the Romans brought after they invaded Britain.
Session 2: History and English
The Death of King Prasutagus!
Chn learn about the events leading up to Boudicca’s rebellion and use a simple script to create a short drama depicting these events. / ·  Learn about the events leading to Boudicca’s rebellion.
·  Empathise with Boudicca’s feelings of anger and injustice towards the Romans.
·  Read and rehearse a play script, thinking about expression, gestures and body language.
Session 3: History and English
Boudicca’s Rallying Cry
Chn learn more about the events leading to Boudicca’s rebellion and write a rallying speech to be give by Boudicca to the Celts. / ·  Learn about the events leading to Boudicca’s rebellion.
·  Write a powerful, impassioned speech for Boudicca to rally the tribe.
Session 4 History and English
The Battle of Colchester
Chn learn about the battles fought between Boudicca and the Romans. Using soundtrack of Mornay’s dream, they perform a dance/drama of the Battle of Colchester. / ·  Learn about the battles of Boudicca’s rebellion and the towns and cities burnt and captured.
·  Portray the battle in dance and drama.
Session 5 History and Art
The Story Ends and the Legend Begins
Chn learn how Boudicca’s rebellion ended and create a portrait of Boudicca showing her character as a warrior and a proud leader of her tribe’s people. / ·  Learn how Boudicca’s rebellion ended and understand her legacy in British history.
·  Paint a portrait of Boudicca to show her physical appearance and her personality.

Session 1

Provided: Map of Celtic Britain; 3 sets of cards (cut up from page 1 of Hamilton resource – What the Romans have done for us); A class set of worksheets (page 2 of same); Prompt sheets, enough for easy group (page 3 of same); Timeline resource.

You will need: Pencils; Pens and coloured pencils.

Session 2

Provided: Scene from Roman Play script (one copy per child).

You will need: Coloured highlighter pens.

Session 3

Provided: Boudicca’s Rallying Speech scaffold.

You will need: Whiteboard or flip chart/pens; A toy sword.

Session 4

Provided: Battle script (you will need 4 copies).

You will need: Soundtrack - Braveheart – Mornay’s Dream; Access to a large space, e.g. hall.

Session 5

Provided: PowerPoint Presentation – Images of Boudicca.

You will need: Paper; Pencils; Paints; Brushes; Water pots.
