LIQUID COOLERS

PART - GENERAL

SUMMARY

Section Includes: Include labor, materials, equipment, and accessories necessary to furnish and install an industrial evaporative fluid cooler with related pump, water treatment system, and controls.

SUBMITTALS

Shop Drawings: Submit a portfolio of Shop Drawings and Product Data showing dimensions and capacity of fluid cooler, pump(s), and water treatment system.

Supports: Submit suggested structural support, including dimensions, sizes, and locations for mounting bolt holes. Include Weight Distribution Drawings showing point loadings.

Controls: Submit schematic showing capacity controls.

Warranty: Mechanical equipment, including fan motor, drive system, bearings, structure, etc., shall be warrantied by the manufacturer for a period of not less than 5years from the date of startup/installation.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Corrosion Protection: Steel components shall be made from hotdip galvanized steel with cut edges given a protective coat of zincrich compound. Apply a final coating of zincchromatized aluminum to units after assembly to provide additional corrosion protection.

PAN/FAN SECTION

Construction: Combination pan/fan section shall be constructed of heavy gauge hotdip galvanized.

Pan/fan section shall have a solid hotdip galvanized bottom panel to allow for ducted inlet connections.

Fans and Motors: Locate fans and motors in dry entering air stream to provide greater reliability and ease of maintenance. Refer to Section 230513, Electric Motor Schedule, or the Equipment Schedule for voltage and rpm requirements. Refer to Section 230513 for motor minimum efficiency.

Accessories: Standard pan accessories include:

FANS

General Requirements: Forward curved centrifugal fans shall be statically and dynamically balanced.

Housing: Fan housings shall have curved inlet rings for efficient air entry, and rectangular discharge cowls shall extend into the pan to increase efficiency and prevent water from entering fans.

Supports: Mount fans on a steel shaft supported by selfaligning, relubricative bearings with cast iron housings.

Extend lubrication lines to be accessible from face of unit.

Corrosion Protection: Protect fan discharge cowls, air inlet vanes, fan cylinders, fan panels, and bearing supports with a corrosion protection system.

FAN MOTOR AND DRIVE

Location: Locate motors in a protective enclosure on an easily adjusted heavy duty motor base.

Belt Drive: Design Vbelt fan drive(s) for not less than 150percent of motor nameplate horsepower.

Protection: Protect drives and moving parts by removable hotdip galvanized screens and panels.

COIL SECTION

General Requirements: Cooler coils shall be prime surface steel, tested at 350psig air pressure under water and hotdip galvanized after fabrication. Design coils for low pressure drop with sloping tubes for free drainage of system.

Encasement: Heat transfer section of industrial fluid cooler shall be encased with hotdip galvanized steel panels. Section shall be removable from pan.

WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM

Flow Rate: Water shall be distributed uniformly over the coils at a flow rate of not less than 4.5gpm per square foot of coil crosssection to ensure complete wetting of the coil at all times.

Components: System shall consist of hotdip galvanized steel header and spray branches with plastic distribution nozzles having a minimum opening of 3/4inch by 5/16inch.

Branches and spray nozzles shall be held in place by snapin rubber grommets providing quick removal of individual nozzles or complete branches for cleaning or flushing.

WATER CIRCULATION PUMP (SPRAY PUMP)

Description: Mount a closecoupled, bronze fitted centrifugal pump equipped with a mechanical seal on pan and completely pipe to suction strainer and water distribution system. Pump shall be installed vertically to drain freely when pan is drained.

General Requirements: Eliminators shall be constructed of hotdip galvanized steel and be removable in easily handled sections. Eliminators shall have a minimum of (3)changes in air direction with a hooked leaving edge and shall direct discharge air away from the fans.

General Requirements: Provide discharge hood for unit with a 2position positive closure damper and damper actuator(s). Refer to Article 2.13 of this Section.

CORROSION PROTECTION SYSTEM

General Requirements: Provide metal components of cooler with a corrosion protection system applied by the manufacturer.

Assembly: Units shall be assembled with phenolicepoxy coated, cadmium plated, washer head fasteners.

Characteristics:

When "X" is scribed to base substrate, it shall be able to withstand 6,000 hours of 5percent salt spray test in accordance with ASTM B117.

When "X" is scribed to base substrate, it shall show no signs of chemical attack after 6,000 hours of exposure in acidic (pH4) and alkaline (pH11) water solutions at 95degreesF.

System shall not fracture or delaminate after 160inchpounds direct impact from a 0.625inch radius impact tool in accordance with ASTM D2794.

System shall not crack as a result of 6,000 hours of continuous ultraviolet exposure, equivalent to 120,000 hours of normal sunlight radiation.

System shall show no signs of erosion when exposed continuously for 6,000 hours to high pressure (60pounds) water jet.

EVAPORATIVE COOLER WATER TREATMENT

General Requirements: Contractor shall provide a chemical feed system, where indicated on Drawings, for chemical treatment of evaporative cooler spray water. Equipment and water treatment shall be provided by a single water treatment firm in order to ensure system compatibility. System shall meet requirements of evaporative cooler manufacturer.

Feeding Equipment: Contractor shall provide an automatic packaged chemical feed and bleedoff system. The system shall program inhibitor feed in proportion to evaporative cooler makeup water. This will be accomplished by means of a water meter in makeup line and timer combination. Size meter in accordance with cooler capacity. Control bleedoff by continuous monitoring of conductivity of circulating tower water.

Control Box: Control box shall contain electronic circuits and flowthrough probe. Mount (3)mode lenses in a vertical row labeled, "Power", "Bleed", and "Treat". Mount control box in a separate weatherproof cover on cooler.

BleedOff: Bleed system shall consist of an electrically controlled, 24volt normally closed solenoid valve. System shall be capable of operating up to 100psi with a 5psi minimum operating pressure differential.

Chemical Tank and Feed Pump: Tank assembly shall include a 30gallon polyethylene tank with a fiberglass cover on which the chemical feed pump is mounted. Pump shall have a capacity of 1gph at a discharge pressure of 100psi.

Water Treatment Chemicals: Furnish 1year supply of recommended chemicals for prevention of scale, corrosion, and microbiological growth in open recirculating system. Furnish chemicals in a liquid form. Chemicals shall not contain ingredients harmful to system materials of construction.

Test Equipment: Basic water test equipment, including carrying case and reagents for use with suppliers products, shall be furnished with system and shall include apparatus for determining pH, treatment residual, and bleedoff control.

COOLER CONTROL

Dampers: Provide a 2position, positive closing damper with actuator in intake duct, ______, in conjunction with the 2position positive closing damper with actuator in the discharge hood, . Provide an airfoil type damper, , located in the discharge of each fan housing.

Controls: Locate a temperature sensor in discharge line from cooling tower. A remote terminal, mounted in a control panel with closed circuit cooler magnetic starters, will open , modulate , start water circulation pump (spray pump), and start cooling tower blower to perform as follows:

When discharge water temperature rises to 75degreesF, dampers shall open and spray pump shall start.

On a rise to 80degreesF, discharge damper shall start to modulate open. When discharge dampers are 50percent open, cooling tower blower shall start on low speed.

When temperature reaches 85degreesF, discharge damper shall be 100percent open and cooling tower blower shall switch to high speed.

On a drop in temperature and a damper modulation to 40percent, open blower shall switch to low speed.

On a further damper modulation to 10 percent, blower shall stop and dampers ______shall close.

PART - EXECUTION

INSTALLATION

Base Supports: Install (2) 8inch wide by 8inch high footing pads of poured concrete with (2)No.3 reinforcing rods continuous. Length of pads shall correspond with unit size. Top of pads shall be level.

Piping: Provide flanged square head cocks for shutoff valves at piping connections to cooler for fluid to be cooled.

Install makeup water meter, timer, bleedoff, and conductivity sensing device.

Contractor shall install (1)1/2inch PVC line from chemical feed pump to suction side of evaporator recirculation pump. Install a capped 1/2inch PVC line as above for future chemical feed system and evaporator recirculating pump.

Duct Connections: Connect ductwork with dampers, sensors, and controllers from intake louver to cooler and from discharge hood on cooler to discharge louver.

POWER AND CONTROL

Starters/Disconnects: Contractor shall provide a control panel junction box with starters and disconnects for centrifugal blower(s) and spray pump(s).

Wiring: Contractor shall wire from power source through disconnects and starters with auxiliary contacts in control panel to centrifugal blower and spray pump.

Contractor shall provide control wiring through transformers, relays, contactors, and sensors to damper and motor controls.

Damper Operators: Operators shall close dampers on a loss of power.

STARTUP AND GUARANTEE

Warranty: Cooler shall be fully guaranteed for 1year from date of system startup. Eliminators and fill shall be guaranteed for 2years for full replacement of media.

StartUp: Contractor shall provide factory service personnel to supervise installation, check features, start tower, and instruct Owner's operator on procedures for operating and maintaining tower.

Supervision and Services: Chemical supplier shall provide a consulting service program for a period of 1year. System shall include technical assistance during installation, instruction in system precleaning, and training of Owner=s maintenance personnel in operation, chemical feeding, and testing of water treatment system. A written report of tests made and necessary recommendations will be left with the Owner's representative.
