MontavillaCommunity Center is seeking a TEACHER for our popular preschool program.

We are recruiting for a Preschool Teacher for our Pre-Preschool, Pre-KindergartenPreschool Enrichment programs.We are a play-based Preschool that implements a curriculum students build upon through the year. By engaging students in arts & crafts, reading stories, welcoming special guests, imaginative play, hands on learning, etc. we start children on the path to a life long love of learning.

Preference will be given to applicants who have an ECE, Child Development, Elementary Education, or Special Education degree or have been an instructor for 2 or more years in a preschool classroom setting, implementing curriculum.

MontavillaCommunity Center is located at 8219 NE Glisan, Portland, OR97220.
This position is part-time; pay rate is $11-$13, DOE.
The selected preschool teacher(s) will be responsible for the following workshifts & classes:

Mon & Wed, workshift 8:30am – 3:30pm

9-10:30am Pre Preschool (ages 2 ½ - 3 yrs)

11am-12:30pm Pre Preschool (ages 2 ½ - 3 yrs)

1pm-3pmEnrichment Program (ages 3-5 yrs)

Tue & Thu, workshift 11am – 5pm

11:30-1:30pmEnrichment Program (ages 3-5 yrs)

2:30-4:30pmPre-Kindergarten (ages 4-5 yrs)

The above shifts allow for 30 minutes before & after each class for set-up/clean-upprep work.
Classes are held in the Multi-purpose & Preschool rooms at MontavillaCommunity Center, both are shared/multi-use spaces.
GENERAL FUNCTION
The Preschool Teacher position is responsible for creating, planning & implementing lesson plans based on an early childhood curriculumcoordinated with the onsite Preschool Specialist for pre-preschoolpre-kindergarten age students. In addition to the 3 academic preschool classes, this Preschool Teacher will also plan, implement & instruct an Enrichment Program focused on social interaction,recreation. The Preschool Teacher takes direction from thePreschool Specialist who oversees the Montavilla Community Center Early Childhood Education Program. Duties include supervising aides & volunteers, working with families & children from a variety of socio-economic & ethnic backgrounds, maintaining control of a class & disciplining children in a non-punitive way while providing a healthy, safe & hazard free environment for children to learn. Additional duties include planning & implementing curriculum, inventorying supplies & submitting supply requests; attending & participating in staff, parent & professional meetingschecking & maintaining class attendance lists. The Preschool Teacher is expected to deliver a high level of customer serviceto carry out individual responsibilities with initiative, independence & creativity while exercising sound professional judgment & problem-solving skills. Must have experience working with preschool age youtha strong understanding of age appropriate activities/behaviors/expectations.

TO QUALIFY
Applicants must possess & specifically address in a cover letter & resume the following:
• Knowledge of current trends, techniques, & principles for implementing & assessing early childhood programs & activities
• Knowledge of methods, practices, & standards for maintaining control of a classadministering non-punitive discipline
• Ability to work with families & children from a variety of socio-economic & ethnic backgrounds
• Ability to instruct & oversee part-time, volunteersseasonal/casual staff as classroom aides
• Ability to work with children with special needs (child may or may not have a personal assistant)
• Ability to instruct work as a team within a multi- classroom programcoordinate activities to fit within the structure of the overall program.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
1. Experience leading classes of up to 12 children, ages 2 ½ -5, with or without an aide
2. Minimum commitment through June 15th 2012. Preference will be given to those who are looking to continue teaching & growing the program for the coming 2012-2013 school yearbeyond.
3. 1st Aid/CPR certification must be current or obtained within 30 days of hire
4. ECE, Child Development, Elementary Education, or Special Education degree preferred
PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES
1. Plan, implement & instruct educationally appropriate lesson plans including free play, circle time, theme based activities, gross motor, fine motor, language development & social interaction
2. Provide a classroom environment conducive to learning with interactive learning stations that change & evolve with different themes
3. Communicate with parents through class newsletters, parent meetings/conferences as needed & daily check-ins.
4. Provide a consistent approach toward maintaining class control in a positive, non punitive discipline style
5. Respond to parent questions, concerns & issues in an open, proactive, solution based manner
6. Act as a positive role model to children & staff in language, actions, behavior, attire,involvement
7. Work as a team with the Preschool Specialist, additional preschool teachers, preschool aides, recreation staff,front desk staff
8. Maintain a tidy, clean, organized, kid-friendly shared room with rotating bulletin boards & decorations according to theme
9. Communicate room challengesissues to the Preschool Specialist, Recreation Coordinator,Community Center Director as appropriate.
10. Create supply lists of materials to be purchased or replacedgive to the Preschool Specialist
11. Attend mandatory MontavillaCommunity Center all-staff meetings & preschool specific staff meetings as scheduled.
12. Plan & organize class field trips & visitors to enhance classroom learning experience
13. Other duties as assigned
