Combining Diabetes Empowerment Education Program™ (DEEP™) Modules 7 and 8
Learning Objectives
- Identify medications available for controlling diabetes, hypertension, lipids in the blood; know their generic name, mode of action, and side effects.
- Describe the precautions that must be taken in relation to the use, dosage, and storage
of medications. - Describe strategies for clear communication with the diabetes team, especially with the doctor and
the pharmacist. - Use the medical care guidelines.
- Recognize stress and its effects.
- Recognize the signs of depression associated with diabetes, and depression’s effects on the individual and family.
- Differentiate between the symptoms of depression, hypoglycemia, and hyperglycemia.
- Establish clear communication with family and friends.
- Apply strategies to mobilize family and friends in support of the participant’s self-management.
- Reference a patient’s rights to obtain benefits in the treatment of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
- Make a Weekly Action Plan.
15–20 Minutes Before Workshop
- Have all participants sign in.
- Have all participants fill out a post-test (green).
Workshop Activities
- Address challenges and feelings related to the use of medicines.
- Discuss medications for high blood pressure, diabetes, and lowering cholesterol.
- Discuss insulin, injectors, and difficulties with insulin.
- Discuss how medications for diabetes work. Help participants recognize what they are taking.
- Discuss the healthcare team.
- Discuss questions to ask the doctor.
- Review the self-care guide.
- Discuss what stress is and how to manage it.
- Perform the relaxation session.
- Read aloud Mr. King’s or Lupe’s story.
- Review the depression self-evaluation.
- Review depression symptoms vs. hypoglycemia vs. hyperglycemia.
- Discuss the treatment of depression.
- Review how to involve family and friends to cope with stress.
- Review patient’s rights.
- Weekly Action Plan: First Steps Towards Control (Perform the last 15 minutes of class.)
